according to my very out of date catalogue, it appears to be the date. #49 is the small date and #53 being the large. Looking at both of them... I can see the difference. Hope that helped.

As a youngster, I like to find NZ pre-decimal and foreign coins that had made It's way into circulated coinage.
The thought of holding a object of the past with it's hidden history really intrigued me as a youngster...and still does.
I'm not sure but according to Krause it looks like the difference lies in the height of the date numerals on the obverse but I imagine it will be very difficult to tell which is which without having them next to each other

Thank you both, lysdexic and radrick. I have a 1905 which must be KM 53 and the date on that is larger than my 1903, therefore, the 1903 must be KM 49.
