Today I went to my bank to get some 50ps because for the last week they haven’t received any coins apart from pound coins (U.K. coin shortage?) so this time they had bags but only three so I got those plus a bag of £2s for fun.

These are my commemorative finds (also the year 2000,2004,2007 and 2008 for my date run of £2 coins)

(Left to right) 2013 Christopher Ironside, 2016 Battle of Hastings and 2016 Shakespeare tragedy 2 pound coin.

But if you look at the obverse it has some strange lines on it and that’s not damage because I’ve rubbed it and it does not feel different to be post mint damage.

NB I read the coin before looking at the coin page and my reading would fit. With better photos I could say it with more confidence.

Okay...here's I got recently and don't get too much shocked, but I was shocked to see it :D

Here are some highlights of what I've got

GuangXu Kashgar 3 Mithqual silver coin

Rashidin (Turkestan Khanate) cash

Abkai fulingga (Manchu script) cash

Semirechye and Proto-Qarakhanid cash

Yuan Dynasty ('Phags-pa script) cash

Sinkiang 8 cash and 10 cash coins

Lead cash coins from Five Dynasties, Ten Kingdoms, one of the chaotic period in Chinese history

Iron cash coins from Northern Song and Southern Song Dynasty

Lead cash coins with Northern Song Dynasty, possible mortuary money?

"Life is all about being too wrapped up in the now to care about the future. When the future becomes the past, you start to regret what you've done."
My first purchase, a group of Pacific Banknotes has arrived!

Fiji $2 - 2007, last type issued before the coin

Fiji $5 - 2013, Polymer note replace the brown $5 as the new $100 note was released.

Tonga 20 Pa'anga - 2008 Siaosi Tupou V series - complements my $2, $5 and $10 of the same series,
Not listed on Numista yet, but given how slow they are approving my Fijian additions - I am in no rush to add it yet (Hint - Emperors of Numista).
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

And also these 4 Papua New Guinea notes. These are cheap here as the Kina has slumped to 40 cents in NZ money and also the notes are not brought by banks due to their instability.

The 100 Kina cost me just $15, yet it has an exchange value of $39 or so.

10 Kina - late 1980s

20 Kina - late 1980s as well

50 Kina, 1989 1st issue of that denomination showing Michael Somare (Sir now) and the Government building at Waigani (Boroko). Other side shows a collection of masks, costumes and carvings of the diverse peoples of PNG.

100 Kina 2008, anniversary of Central Bank (1973 - 2008). Shows also the gov house and Polymer. The back showings industries and crops of PNG. The notes are Green and came out after this one.

I have always liked the PNG notes, especially the designs. The notes to 10 Kina were designed and came out in 1975, whilst the 20 Kina was added a few years later and these show tribal ornaments and trade items amongst the peoples.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Nice adds 'Moneytane.'
I can easily see the appeal as all have interesting designs.
I wanted to pick up something newer from Ireland (no Lady Laverly) so I got this One Pound P-70c (1982) banknote that just came in:

I like the reverse of the note as it's a bit of an artsy design (IMO).

Thanks galor and Wwc. I think I'll add it to the catalogue. There is the same type of counterfeit ─very bad counterfeit─ for the George IV Nova Scotia penny tokens, which I will also add.

For some reason, the Charlton catalogue only points out that contemporary cast counterfeits exist. They should actually be listed separately as (private) currency tokens since they did circulated, even though to a very limited extent.

Being the "other" Colonial collector on Numista, I am extremely jealous. Excellent piece!!!!

I spent about 5 years in QC for an industrial minerals company and much of the sand we sold was for castings. Modern castings are made with high purity sands which are specifically sized and coated with a polymer resin. The resin reacts at two temperatures; 1st making the mold and 2nd with the molten metal.

If I'm not mistaken, the casting for your piece would have been made with Olivine sand coated in wax (maybe rubber?).

Hey all,

This weekend I went to an antique book fair and I found this beautiful lot of German Notgeld banknotes !
Very unexpected to find them but it made my day !
In total there are a bit more than 250 different banknotes and it took me over 4h to sort them out by city ... :°
I'm in love with the design and it looks like I will start a new collection.

Kind regards !

I upgraded my favorite 5 Kopecks - Ekaterina II ЕМ
My personal list of scammers from Numista: erniemix, yvain, CassTaylor
Got this today ...

'Vintage German Maria Anna Augusta Ferdinandi 1836 Coronation White Medal'
Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
I brought this bulk lot of English shillings (Actually 3 lots that cost $45 in total)

Silver coins (14), 1882, 1920 - 22, 1928, 32, 33, 35, 39, 40, 41, 44, 46 Scotland 45

Cupronickel shillings, 18 plus 1970/71 5p and 1968 Jersey 5p

Usually I would not buy worn rubbish like this, but I did for 3 reasons.

1. They were cheap and easy to get.
2. I needed most of the dates including the silver and cupronickels
3. I have just started shillings and these are decent starter coins.

More importantly the melt value on the 14 coins (1 x .925 and 13 x .500 silver) is around $45 so that means I can sell them back as "Melters" when I get better quality examples and also they fill spaces for the time being. All I forked out for was bulk silver, I paid $45 for $45 worth of silver that gave me some free cupronickel coins I need (12 of the 18 coins I did not have).

So quite a wise buy - as you will see, lockdown has caused me to buy some bizarre coins this month!

Interesting! Obviously they would have needed your expertise because it's hard to imagine that a cast could be more incompetently done.

And that's probably why these pieces are quite scarce. They were generally not accepted as currency.

I don't expect they would have used rubber that early. That's actually an interesting question. How early did natural rubber come to these colonies? Were the early postal cancellation stamps made of rubber or wood or something else?

Some additional world mixes that cost me peanuts

Denmark mix including the old 10 Kroner and the 20 Kroner coin worth more than the cost of these!

1910s and 1920s Swiss coins, some in very nice condition

1930s and 1940s including a zink 1 rappen, some of the 30s coins are basically UNC

Have a nice weekend.
Purchased on Wednesday at the National Mint store. Czech circulation coins - this year 2021, I know nothing special, but few people have it in their collection this year. And there is also evaluated in I think in 1993 the most beautiful coins in the world ( 50Kč).
and token, because the set is marked as a gift for a newborn baby ,, welcome to the world ,,

Ivan
I have to agree, I love those Czech coins and the 50 is a joy to behold. I have a 2000 council of Europe set, which is from the era where you still had the Haleru coins.

The set had specially designed 10 and 20 Korun coins and a weird metal thing! The 50 looks stunning.

Coins I brought from a bulk dealer include

1936 Florin - a good spare coin, high Fine and a scarce date, nice kiwi detail and clean example

1949 Bulk crowns - thats right some 183 grams of silver, we have stained, dented, worn, badly cleaned and 3 pretty good coins here!

Worn pocket piece example, this coin is usually found in at least VF condition, this one is barely Good.

I had a great banknote swap, with a dozen notes.

This is the crown jewel of the swap, Germany 100 mark 1910:

I think this note is more than worthy submitting to MPCC.

Another notes worthy mentioning:
-Germany 5 mark 1904;
-Poland 50 zlotych 1929;
-Poland 20 zlotych 1940.
Just recieved: Umayyad Caliphate, date unknown.
Saw this at an auction and I was intrigued. It has surely been cleaned at some point but, I couldn't find a photo on the internet with more detail (particularly the eagle). Much brighter in hand and it has some ghosting.

Here's the date:

"year" (pink) "five" (green) "and" (blue) "ninety" (pink). The diacritics (white dots) were added by me but they are not on the coin. If you move the diacritics on the pink word on the left, you could read "seventy", but I don't think "year 75" is possible.

I finally decided on starting a U.S. collection to silence all my friends who keep asking me "why on earth do you only collect from Hong Kong". My first five entrants are:
- a Silver Certificate dollar from 1935, no motto
- $1 Federal Reserve Notes (1977 - L, 1985 - F, 1988 - B)
- a $2 Federal Reserve Note (1976 - L)

Of course, I've managed to get my hands on a few local goodies as well, but sadly at this stage the Japanese Military Yen notes are among the last few types I can still afford. So I have:
- two different 5 Sen notes, one from the second series and the other from the third series,
- a 10 sen note and 50 sen note from the second series,
- a $100 note from the Bank of China with a special serial number: 369369! I found it while looking for spare change this morning.
"Life is all about being too wrapped up in the now to care about the future. When the future becomes the past, you start to regret what you've done."
I don't collect US banknotes because they are the ugliest of all notes ever made. Basically no design change in over 100 years, whute and green colours. They're just disgusting.

This is my answer if someone asks why I don't collect US banknotes. The HK banknotes are really colourful with cool designs. You should be proud if them! :)
KS3551 - I say good on you for wanting to collect US banknotes. Who cares if someone else thinks they're ugly - it's what you think that counts. If it fascinates and pleases you why not.

Ngdawa, you should be ashamed of yourself being such a grouch and negative nora! Who cares what you think, you can think it, but don't rain on someone's parade. Just because you don't like American notes - does not mean you can dump on someone who does!

We don't judge you on what you collect, so why should you judge them. I mean many of my worn silver shillings I am sure would not meet with your approval or other people's either - who cares.

Everyone should be able to collect what they want without flippant and derisive comments from others. Afterall that type of negative nonsense is what puts people off - I call such people Numismatic gatekeepers - don't be one.

As Oscar Wilde said - A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

First off, wow! Calm down, okay? You have to make and atom bomb out of a grain of sand. So, breathe.

Secondly, I never said anything about his collection. But if I would say anything, I'd say he should be proud of his collection, and he should be proud of the banknotes of HK. He shouldn't switch focus to something else because some else says so, he should do it because he wants to.
He has a great collection, no question about it, and I'm so happy he's happy with his collection, and his additions to it.

Now, I don't know why I have to explain myself to you – everytime. Just chill, mate. You don't always have to act out like this over nothing, it's getting embarrasing.
Ive lived in the USA for almost 60 years, grew up here. After having traveled in Europe and the western Pacific, and Canada, I have to say, US dollar bills are unique, and uniquely ominous. All are alike in dark suits, like CIA spooks, who would sell their own mothers at need.

Collect them for whatever motive you may, but they are not beautiful.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very proud of my HK collection. It's just that... I've gotten my hands on almost all HK coin and banknote types (not years/dates) post-war. The ones I'm missing - usually pre-war - are really expensive (like, hundreds or thousands of HKD expensive) and a lot of the time the dealers don't necessarily have what I want, so at this stage it's hard for me to keep expanding. For example, I had originally been gunning for a hundred-dollar note from the early 70s but I'd been told that these banknotes are all the craze nowadays - and I couldn't find a single shop that carried them!

Anyway, here are a list of basic reasons for the start of my US collection, in descending order:
  1. Just some new things to look at.
  2. The relative ease and convenience of a projected US collection is second only to Hong Kong, since I have dozens of relatives residing in New York who are more than happy to collect notes for me.
  3. My friends constantly questioning my status as a true numismatist simply because I had collected only from Hong Kong.
  4. This year is the fifth anniversary of my collection (the earliest record I have is September 2016), and I wanted to do something special to celebrate the occasion.
  5. I was attracted by the Silver Certificate dollar as it was different from the Federal Reserve Notes.
  6. It's dirt cheap for the time being. It got even more dirt cheap when my grandmother gave me permission to inherit her stash of old-looking US dollars.
"Life is all about being too wrapped up in the now to care about the future. When the future becomes the past, you start to regret what you've done."
You should be very proud, too! You have a great collection, and you shouldn't have to defend your choice of niche to anyone, especially not to me – and stranger on the internet – but also not to your friends.

All your reason are very fair, except for number 3, and that's what concerns me the most. You should collect what you want, not what your friends think you should collect. But as long as you are proud of your collection, and find inspiration and joy in what you collect, you are doing the right thing and should continue on that path without thinking twice.

I wish you best of luck with your collection, and happy hunting!
You guys are hilarious! (Esp "Mr Midnight's" take on the BEP notes).

Collect whatever you like (so long as its not ZeroEuros, Fantasy, Coupons nor notgeld!) Sorry I just had to write that...(Just teasing you "Galor" & you blokes who collect notgeld!X-D)

Actually, & almost seriously, I think its healthy to have a few lines drawn in the sand in terms of what one won't touch (or add to his/her collection) since this hobby can get expensive, fairly fast! And, on that note (pun intended) I hope collectors don't just collect something b/c its super cheap. Remember often "less is more" & try to find some middle ground on what you'll settle for. I write this b/c from past experience I've ended up upgrading the majority of my collection (which costs more).

So speaking of costly notes, here's my latest from the "land of lucky charms"
A Ten Shilling (P-63a not so bad):

And a large Ten Pound (P-66c which is fairly dear):

Serial Number 8 - Lovely notes - love that £10 especially.

Ngdawa, I reacted because you have done that attention seeking, lets drop a bombshell nonsense more than once and I have frequently been the target of your barbs. And I don't intend to stop now. Glad you saw sense and backed down though.

More beauties from me soon.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Ehm, no, you weren't the target. What made you think that? You were merely a bystander who started yelling without reason. There really was no "target". Lol.
I had saved a Bahamian 4 shilling note from my remotest childhood,
possibly my first experience of having treasure, It was beautiful!
but I can not find it now.
I must have sold it.

Asked for change at college got this.

Bad rim damage and many scratches on the obverse but the reverse is much better.

Also with that I got a lightly circulated 2002 50p
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
I have just received this very special 2 sols coin.
At the reverse the engraver put first an S at the place of the 2 for the value and corrected this afterwards.
The remainder of the S is still clearly visible.

Sorry for the poor quality but in my opinion it is genuine because the colour is right, it sounds the same when tapped with other normal £2s, no unusual rotations and it’s non-magnetic.
