Coins issued by various states in the Malay archipelago seems to be filed under Malay > Malay Peninsula, even for states not located in the peninsula. Many of these states are located in what is now modern Indonesia. While some like Srivijaya and Malacca historically had presence on both side of the Malacca straits (Malay Peninsula in the Malaysia side vs Sumatra in the Indonesia side), it seems weird that these coins cannot be found under Indonesia category, especially for Banten which is not even within the vicinity of Malacca straits. This include coins from:

Aceh (northern tip of Sumatra) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces88799.html
Bangka (an island east of Palembang) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces108066.html
Banten (western Java) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces188999.html
Jambi (southern Sumatra) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces135077.html
Palembang (southern Sumatra) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces50591.html
Srivijaya (while its exact capital is unknown, the area around modern Palembang, Indonesia is regarded as the probable center of the empire) ex: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces108104.html

Is there a reason why these coins are filed exclusively under Malaysia>Malay Peninsula, or is it possible for some of them to be sorted under Indonesia?

Thank you in advance
Hello,

There is a more comprehensive proposal I made in the ref forum for Indonesia:

However, no consensus has been reached yet.
Unfortunately, I could not open the link you gave. It loads for several second then I got thrown to https://en.numista.com/forum/ without the topic number.

I did not thought [Malay States] before, but I think that it is sensible. I assume the map view would span the Malay archipelago encompassing modern Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, East Timor, and Philippines. Incidentally, should cases like Philippines' Piloncito https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces178768.html be included under [Malay states] as well?

It seems that the [Indonesia+South-East Asia] vs [Malay States] does not have the same number of listing. Macassar for example is missing from the [Malay States] listing. I somewhat favor using [Malay States], augmented with some states in the [Indonesia+South-East Asia] listing. I do have some questions/suggestions for the names in [Indonesia+South-East Asia] list:

1) South-East Asia > I don't think [Islamic States] and [Native Kingdoms] are mutually exclusive in the context of the region? [Native Kingdoms] is perhaps more neutral and preferable. Likewise, I think [Indonesia, Islamic states of] should be [Indonesia, Native Kingdoms].
2) Macassar/Gowa > Suggest changing Macassar to Makassar, the spelling used in most Makassar studies today and Makassar people themselves
3) Cheribon / Cirebon, Sultanate of > Like above, maybe Cirebon is sufficient
4) Aceh / Atcheh / Atjh > Like above, just use Aceh. If all of them are included, at least Atjh should be Atjeh.
5) Karaton Mojopahit / Majapahit Empire > Karaton Mojopahit is a later day Javanese-specific pronunciation of "Majapahit", with addition of "Kraton". Suggest just using Majapahit Empire
6) Sailendra/Shailendra/Selendra Kingdom > I think only Sailendra is sufficient? If minor variant spelling is included, then Srivijaya would Srivijaya/Sriwijaya. Incidentally, as far as I know, Sailendra is more of a dynastic entity associated with the Medang/Mataram Kingdom. So perhaps only one of them is necessary.
Thanks for the feedback. To clarify, I didn't come up with this structure and these names myself (e.g. native vs Islamic). They are compiled from these sources:

- Mitchiner "Oriental Coins and their Values", volumes 1 and 3,
- Cribb "Magic Coins of Java...",
- Wicks "Money, Market and Trade in Early Southeast Asia"
- Mitchiner "Early Sout-East Asian Currency Systems"
- Pridmore "The Native Coinages of the Malay Peninsula"

If you have other sources, feel free to suggest them and i am happy to check.

Also, the names separated by the "/" are for search alternatives, and only one version will be used in the name.
Ah I see. Thank you for the information. I don't have additional reference at the moment, so maybe I will only offer additional search alternatives (in bold):

1) Bengkulu / Bencoolen Presidency
2) Aceh / Atcheh / Atjeh, Sultanate of (the e is missing from atjh)
3) Makassar / Macassar / Gowa, Sultanate of
4) Keraton Mojopahit / Majapahit Empire (keraton is the spelling listed in the Indonesian dictionary, variants include kraton and karaton. Karaton however is rather archaic and the least intuitive for current users)
5) Sriwijaya / Srivijaya Kingdom

I hope a consensus will soon be reached.
