New Zealand 1oz 2003 Lord of the Rings fake?

6 posts • viewed 544 times
HI I recently acquired what I believed to be the following coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces35551.html

A 1oz silver with gold highlighting New Zealand issue. However, this one is magnetic and weighs 29.19g. Pictures below

Are there known fakes of this coin?

Thanks in advance
I don't know specifically about fakes that might be out there, but to my eye there's a bunch of small details on the script on the obverse that look off on your example. Combined with the weight/magnetic problem, you might want to try and get a hold of whoever sold it to you.
I've got a fake that I picked up. Mine's more obvious because it doesn't have the $1 on the reverse.
And actually, the font of the 1 in the $1 on yours seems to be different than the one in the catalog.
If it's a legit coin, it could be a plated one of these:

That coin is not magnetic unless it was plated with nickel which could explain the slight increase in weight.
Do we know if a plated version exists for the coin?

Yes, there are chinese fakes around of this coin. They pop up on ebay occasionally for cheap prices.
