Searching under UK, you have to type '¼ penny' as face value to get any farthings from 1837 onwards. Typing 'farthing' gives you quarter and third farthings, but no farthings, and typing '1 farthing' returns nothing. A farthing is a quarter of a penny, but the coin says 'farthing' right on it, and no one types '1/100 dollar' when looking for American cents. Can this be changed so that typing 'farthing' returns all farthings, and typing '1 farthing' returns 1 farthing coins?
If the referee doesn't see this topic soon I'd suggest submitting a change request for one Farthing coin listing: replace "1/4 Penny = 1/48 Shilling" with "1 Farthing = 1/4 Penny = 1/48 Shilling" or "1 Farthing = ¼ Penny = 1/48 Shilling" to see the response from the referee. In addition to text also include a link to this topic in the source box. (Don't put in requests for multiple listings until consensus is reached.)
This is the correct forum to discuss the face value fields, instead of the previous forum, because this issue has to do with individual listings and not how the web site works. In other words, the problem can be addressed by changing listings and doesn't require code changes in the web interface or database for the site.
(The guidelines say the correct format would be "1 Farthing = ¼ Penny = 1⁄48 Shilling" but don't use that as currently searches for "1/48" won't match fields that use "1⁄48" so general fractions should be avoided. That is a web site issue, and there is a bug report on the issue. ¼ is a distinct character and I've tested and haven't found cases where that fails in searches.)
To clarify, searches with "¼" (Unicode character /U+BC) or "1/4" on either the input or the target seem to work, but searches with "1⁄4" (Unicode character /U+2044 "Fraction Slash" in the middle) don't currently work in many cases. Supporting Unicode is hard.
I think you are overcomplicating your search. If I put 'farthing' in the standard search field, it returns 91 results.
'Farthing' is the name of the coin, believed to have been 'Fourthing' originally, but the face value is 1/4 penny.
There are no plans to change the UK face value fields at this time.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

Well regardless, there should definitely be a change here...
If putting the denomination in the denomination field does not bring up coins of that very denomination, there is no overcomplication--that is a problem. And as per the guidelines, equivalent values should be included in that field, and so I don't see what the problem is with adding these additional values. There are a lot of coins affected, sure, but the change is still needed...
Quote: "bjherbison"I just put a request in to change the face value for one coin to "1 Farthing = ¼ Penny = 1/48 Shilling = 1/960 Pound", referencing this discussion.
My change request was rejected but "Discussion is ongoing".
