Inadvertant purchase of fake coins

9 posts • viewed 234 times
Hi all, I am after a little advice. A friend of mine purchased 72, what she perceived to be genuine coins, all around 38cm diameter. On arrival at home she discovered they are all fake. Closer inspection revealed some had 'copy' engraved on them and all were underweight from the genuine coin and many had slight discrepancies to genuine coins.
What is the law regarding sale of fake coins and is she able to get a full refund on return of the coins?
Depends on the country and how the listing for the sale was, we would need a bit more information on that. What she perceives or not is not a primary concern.

But 38 cm coins ... T.T
More details would help... But,
Assuming she lives in the UK as per your profile, then this would be a crime.

Thank you.
I have contacted the seller (shop) and asked for a refund. At the moment they have taken my phone number and said they will call me tomorrow.
Very vague details - I can't comment until I have more.

1. What, Where, Who, Why, Which and How?

2. What country were the coins, dates, metals, face value?

3. Name of the shop and dealer, this is a name and shame forum, we want to know if there are dodgy dealers ripping off naive and unsuspecting clients, although if the coins said copy on them, my guess is your friend was in a rush or just incredibly stupid!

4. Are they precious metal? Silver, gold, platinum or just muck metal modern ones.

5. Are you familiar with units of measurement? 38cm is like 15 inches in size or the size of the average cat, not a coin, a 38cm coin would weigh around 100kg.

Until we get some answers instead of some alleged nonsense - this whole thing stinks like a 3 day dead rat corpse and does not belong here.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

I think you have made the correct choice. You asked for a little advice and that's exactly what you got from some members, little advice. Let us know what happens tomorrow.

Well, what was the conclusion of this dispute, or is it still being investigated?
