hi,when i saw that you could buy banknotes from N.K i was stunned because it's a very secretive country and not many people or goods leave their border every year.So i started buying it from various sites(even if not all sites have them due to the embargo on N.K goods) and so i'm asking myself: how do this notes came outside of north korea and how can i spot the differences between a real N.K note and a fake one? for example i just saw for example that thai police had seized many bills (for reference https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1528802/police-seize-8-600-fake-north-korea-banknotes-worth-b1-57m) when the same banknotes are being sold on various sites or even auction sites(as an example https://www.catawiki.com/it/l/58503977-corea-del-nord-200-x-5000-won-2006-pick-46c-original-bundles).Let me know if you have informations about the counterfeiting problem and if you can list a bunch of reputable sites that sells them i would be more than happy to check if i miss some bills as individual dealers are hard to find and especially the ones with this type of bills.
thank you all
It's very probable that North Korea "counterfeits" their own notes. They have ever diminishing qualities in their notes. They have made lithographic versions of earlier issued intaglio notes.

It's entirely possible that the Thai police have this wrong as well.

hi,thanks for your reply.I noticed how N.K. bill quality changes drastically for every series but i understand it because it's not always easy for them to get the materials and machines to produce the bills.Something that i don't understand is why N.K should counterfeit its own bills? i knew the history about superdollars but fake north korean won is a new for me.The more i look online the more times i see seizing from police across the world. So i guess thai police may not be wrong but i don't know really anything about this topic so i'm asking :) best regards
North Korea* earns a lot of money by selling these "commemorative" coins and banknotes. By counterfeit their own banknotes they can sell them for a higher profit to collectors woldwide. A banknote worth 1 USD can be sold for 10 USD, but a counterfeit banknote, which has no value at all, can also be sold for 10 USD. So why just earn 9 USD per banknote, when you can earn 10 USD?

*By North Korea I mean the Leader. He gets all the money. The people get nothing. I just wish people should stop buying these endless commemoratives. Maybe a warning should be issued on the North Korean catalogue, that ever purchase is a personal funding to Kim Jong Un.
i understand what you are saying but i'm asking why someone calls"counterfeit" *something that us made from the central authority that produces them(i mean technically i would call it authentic anyways). then you said that "there should be a warning on the n.k catalogue" When you say that are you referring to the pick or there's another reference for those bills?

*counterfeit definition is "an unautorised replica of the original product" but i guess that kim has the right to pruduce as many bills as he wants

massi1907then you said that "there should be a warning on the n.k catalogue" When you say that are you referring to the pick or there's another reference for those bills?

This was more for the catalogues here on Numista. Jyst so that collectors, young and old, new and veteran, should be aware that purchasing North Korean banknotes and coins in particular, is actually a fubdubg right into Kim Jon Un's pocket.

It might as well be us, the numismatics, who have paid for his gold watch.

This one in the picture costs £10,000.

i am aware of the cons that purchasing this kind of banknote does have but i am also certain that the regime doesn't sustain even 1% of his existence with numismatics.Beside that i'm still curious about the counterfeit made by the north korean central bank but i still can't find any more news .anyone can help?

Not sure if I understand this report from Thailand. How is 8,600 fake won be worth 1.57m Thai baht (USD $45,077)? Won't it be just worthless 8,600 pieces of colourful wall paper?

i guess they're referring on what the banknotes would have been sold with some kind of overvalued valutation(5000 won notes sells tipically for .75 usd)

i also find out that sometimes north korean counterfeits are made with some type of plastic paper or  they say copy on top of the note and these in the operation don't seem to have neither

https://youtu.be/ru42JUdx2M4 for reference in this video some guy founds a fake 1 won bill in a set

Your logic is *khmmm*... interesting. I will try to follow it:

Buy Ukrainian banknotes! Support Zelensky! Get up right now. Go to the bank and buy Ukrainian money. Obey! Or do you want the evil and terrible Putin to win in the war?!

In my book I wrote about 1 won 1992 with an overprint "copy".

No, that is not the same. Ukraine is a fully functioning country with a fully developed government and law system. North Korea's government and law system all goes to one person, in this case Kkm Jong Un.

If you travelnto Nirth Korea, stays at a hitel room, eat at a restaurant and buys a I ♡ NK t-shirt, all of your spent money will end up in the pockets of Kim Jing Un. The hotel owners, restayrant owners and t-shirt shop owner won't benefit much on your spending.

North Korea does not have a welfare system. Normal countries flourish by having tourists coming and spending their money. The money from the tourists goes to the infrastructure that benefits everyone. This is not the case in North Korea. Every single cent you spend in North Korea goes straight to Kim Jong Un. The people of North Korea get's nothing from anything.

North Korea is not a country, it's a corrupt company with a greedy CEO who takes all the company's earnings for himself and refuses to pay salary to his workers. It's time people starts to understand this.

Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!! )))) Seriously? AAaaaaaaaa!!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 You made my day, buddy!!

In Ukraine, Zelensky, a drug addict, runs everything. The courts are corrupt. Lawyers are not allowed in the courtrooms. Zelya bans political parties, closes TV channels, persecutes journalists, encourages Nazism. He continued the genocide of Russian-speaking Ukrainians. He sold the interests of the country to the collective West. There is neither sovereignty nor statehood.

At least Kim Jong-un does not kill his people and does not surrender the sovereignty of his country! I guess that's why you hate him. A small, impoverished, divided country in two, lined with sanctions on all sides, does not bend under the West! No matter what you do, no matter how hard you try since 1950, you can't choke North Korea. 😁

You know his mother tongue is Russian, right? 😉

You know nothing about North Korea, that's crystal clear.

Yes, he was born into a Russian-speaking family of Jewish Ukrainians. So what?

The main thing is that you all know. Kim Jong Un eats babies, shoots his relatives with a cannon and personally sells banknotes, postage stamps and souvenirs to Chinese dealers. I love smart people like you. Write more!

guys we are not talking about the ethical part of buying north korean goods but of the fake banknotes that exists.Do you know any other type of fake banknotes other than the COPY ones and the one that is shawn in the video?
