1917 US Note ("Sawhorse Dollar") varieties [solved]

8 posts • viewed 151 times

I have a 1917 US Note, signatures HS and FW.  Numista lists 2 varieties of this particular note, one is designated “Fr# 39” and one is designated “Fr# 39*”.   I cannot find what the distinction is between the 39 and the 39* varieties.  Any ideas???

Thanks, RandyG

Please always provide a link if you are talking about a specific catalog item.

It most likely is from THIS reference, but because there are already 5 P# , there is no space. But those P# are not explained in the comment section nor are they used in the year line comments. So a little useless if you ask me.

Maybe some member has the catalog and can tell you more.

Fr 39* probably refers to the Star note.

Thank you Idolenz - that explains it!  And I will remember to post a link to the Numista page when I make future inquiries….

And thanks for your response s well, Hibernia!

Hey RandyG,

Thanks for bring this up. I've added comments to show the star note entries.

Numista referee for banknotes from Canada, USA, Costa Rica, China, Macau, Singapore, & Taiwan.

Thank you Titus - that is very helpful!  Now I get it!  Notes with stars by the serial number are replacement notes which are more rare!  I am learning….  I appreciate your help!

Simple The * indicates the replacement or “star” note as shown here (look at the serial #):

Thanks very much, Steve27!
