Need to identify this Mughal coin [solved]

5 posts • viewed 111 times

Hi fellow numismatists,

I am struggling to identify the following coin. My dad has cataloged it as Shah Alam 2 Rupee from Surat Mint (RY22). However I am unable to locate it in the catalog or in Numista.

The patter is exactly same as N#77713 however the RY year on my coin is 22 or 23 whereas the one in Catalog or Numista is for Frozen RY 46

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Girish

It is generally attributed in catalogs to Mughal Empire, KM#724

Though a more correct attribution would be to the Nawabs of Surat.

Coins with with frozen RY#46 are attributed to Bombay Presidency.

If it is not in Numista than you can add it yourself.

Thx @parimal for the prompt answer. I am only starting this journey and now got to go thru another  440 more coins…

I will add my coin into Numista as soon as I get a chance

quick question, while trying to decode the actual inscription, i stumbled upon this link: https://www.mintageworld.com/coin/detail/95345/

the photo shown on this site of the coin  is more closer to the coin which I have rather than KM#724 listed in the catalog. Is it possible that this coin is not listed in World Coin Catalog?

KM#724 is the number given to coin in the name of Shah Alam II coin with badshah ghazi couplet and of Surat mint that were struck during the rule of Nawabs of Surat. So your coin is KM#724

These are hammered coins with coin die larger than the flan of the coin. So not all the details are present on the coin and also the details present on the coin can vary as a result. Moreover the dies would also worn out and new dies would be engraved manually which will also lead to some variation. Such variations are quite common when it comes to hammered coin.
