Hello,

Could you please add a new mintmark to: England: Edward IV- 1 Ryal  Number N# 52753 References Sp# 1950, North# 1549 N#52753.

I have a Ryal mintmark “Sun” [London] . I note this mintmark is not in Spink.

1. It is however noted in The Numismatic Chronicle 1965.

Article: The coinage of the reign of Edward IV.

The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society; Fourth series Vol9 pp132-219 [noted on p201]

2. It is also noted in wildwinds.com although it has a mis-print and Bristol Mint coin attached to the entry. I have written to Dane.

3. I note Ryals of this mint mark on the internet including a PCGS Slabbed MS62 auctioned by Stacks Bowers 2018, ANA Auction, Lot 21016

My coin details:

Weight 7.55g, Diameter: 25.8mm, Thickness 0.6mm, Die Axis 3h, Specific Gravity 18.4g/cc.

It has provenance from a respected coin company from the late 1980s.

Thank you for your time

Michael

Hello,

I'm no specialist is this coinage, so I'm trying to understand.

I could find the article you mentioned: https://www.jstor.org/stable/42662211.

The page 201 of the article specifies that the mintmark is seen on the reverse, so I guess we are discussing the mark in the outer legend of the reverse.

If I understand well, the coins N#205565 and N#52753  differ by the presence of a mintmark on the obverse.

Your specimen belongs to N#205565 (no mintmark on the obverse). We should add a new variety there to list the mintmark “sun”, in addition to “crown” and “long cross fitchee”, which are already listed. The coin is listed at the bottom of page 201 of the mentioned article.

The article also mentions a specimen with a mintmark “sun” on the obverse and a mintmark “sun” on the reverse, illustrated on the plate XII, 5 of the same article.

So I believe we should also add a new variety to N#52753 with mintmark “sun”, in addition to “crown” and “rose”, which are already listed.

Did I get it right?

Hello Xavier,

Thank you for getting back to me. My understanding is  there are three main mintmarks for this coin [Edward IV N# 52753]: Rose, Crown & Sun, all from the Tower Mint. According to Spink these represent different years :

  • Rose [1464-65]
  • Sun [1465-66]
  • Crown [1466-67]
  • Crown & Sun [Often combined 1467-8]
  • Crown & Rose [Sometimes combined 1468-69]

Ref: Spink “Coins of England 2020” at the beginning of the chapter on Edward IV.

These are mainly seen on the reverse of the coin at the beginning of the legend. To confuse things there are also some coins with mintmarks on both the reverse and obverse . The one on your webpage has a “sun” on the obverse and a “crown” on the reverse. I understand this to be a coin minted in 1467-8.   N#52753

As my coin is a Mintmark “Sun” on the reverse and no Mintmark on the  obverse it would have been minted 1465-6. This is not an option on the webpage for Edward IV Royal [Sp#1950]. I was requesting an additional mintmark of “Sun” to add to the “Crown” & "Rose" already available. You might even want to put all 5 options. It's not really a big one for me. I'm quite happy to add my coin to one of the other mintmarks and make a note.

Now that I am “speaking” to you, I would like to personally thank you for your website. It is brilliant and so helpful. As a beginner, I have found the site so easy to use and so informative, answering many of my questions on the forum and using your database for recording my hoard.

I wish you and your staff continuing success. You deserve it.

Kind regards

Michael

Sorry, I am a slow writer. Your second email came in while I was writing my reply.

N#52753 is the equivalent of Spink 1950. This has Large fleurs in the spandrels. It is the one I am talking about. It needs a “Sun” mintmark and possibly a “Sun/Crown” & “Crown Rose” mintmark.

N#205565 is equivalent to the Spink 1951. This has Small trefoils in the spandrels. I have not researched mintmarks on this, as my coin was a option on the website. According to Spink Coins of England, this coin has two mintmarks:

  1. Combined “Long Cross fitchee/Sun”
  2. Combined “Crown/Sun”

Bare in mind Spink also only mentions two mintmark options for Sp1950, which we have just discovered is not correct and is where I suspect your webpage got its information. I would probably leave N#205565 until someone has researched this. Someone will ask you to change it sometime in the future.

Kind regards

Michael

Thank you. I submitted the change request, which will be reviewed by the referee.
