Chilean peso maoi

5 posts • viewed 97 times

I recently acquired 12 1 peso coins from Chile from 2021. The obverse shows the map of Rapa Nui and the reverse shows an image of maoi. There are 12 different types. Are these coins regarded legal tender (and thus be categorized as coin) or are they to be considered tokens or even fantasy coins/exonumia?

Thanks in advance!

A simple search give me this:

I know, I know… I'm sorry, my sincerest and humble apologies.

The listed coins after the link are different than my mentioned coins

Hi,

Yes, they are indeed different …. but non the less fantasies they are fantasies!

They belong to a “newer” series of Easter Island / Rapanui fantasies made for tourists, who began to come back to the island after the COVID pandemic.

Hi,Chilian! My friend, your coins are from a fantasy range of coinage,as you already have been told. They are not legal tender and of a very low collectable value like those that I found for you in a catalogue of ''Unusual World Coins''. As you may see in the screenshot above.
