Bonjour,

Here is a list of Canadian banknote issuers;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_banknote_issuers .

Issuers with a name in French should also have their names with English translations as well.

Aidan.

If only the French name appears on the note, there's no need for a translation in the drop down list. One example is this note:

N#330855

Former Numista referee for banknotes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Saint Helena.

That note's issuer's name is Canadian National Bank in English.

Aidan.

Yes, I think we can all do that translation. It doesn't need to appear in the list of bank names if it wasn't used.

Former Numista referee for banknotes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Saint Helena.

English is an official language in Canada, along with French.

Aidan.

Yes, I think we all know that too. Why aren't you demanding all the English names be translated into French too?

Former Numista referee for banknotes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Saint Helena.

That can be done on the French side.

Aidan.

I could be wrong but aren't the drop-down lists the same?

Former Numista referee for banknotes from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Saint Helena.

I don't think all bank names should be translated in both official languages. Some of them were never used or translated in reality.

Take exemple on the sports team names, The Toronto Maple leaf are not Les feuilles d'érable de Toronto in french, The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are not Les bombardiens bleus de Winnipeg, and The Hamilton Tiger Cats…I'm sure you get the point by now.

Best regards,

Don't forget about the Hudson's Bay Company, which also had its own notes.

Can you please give dates of operations for those entities ? And link an example of entry for each of them ?
Cf the guidelines about requesting new issuing entities, it really eases our work, thanks!

Also, there is a longer list here, can you mix them?

Bump

Apologies, I missed your earlier request. The following was cribbed a few years ago from an old copy of Pick, Specialized Issues (from a library, so I don’t have the edition number). I'm afraid I can't access the longer list you linked to, so I hope this covers them all. A single date indicates only notes from that year were listed. There are two “City Banks” with overlapping dates. The first is listed under “Chartered Banks”, the second under “Spurious and Expired Banks”. We may need a specialist catalogue to disentangle them. Some assistance may well come from Bank Note Museum, where numerous examples can be found. Finaly, it is worth noting that four of these banks also issued tokens: Bank of Montreal, Banque de Peuple, City Bank and Quebec Bank.

OK thanks. It's the same list than in the other thread, which probably comes from wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_chartered_bank_notes

- I removed Barclays that we already had

- I updated name of Bank of Canada by adding “(commercial)”  to distinguish with the current Central Bank

- I distinguished the 2 City Banks by adding the precision found in the wiki link above

I will now format the import file to have a full batch for the database of Canadian banks :-)

Then users will be able to enrich all entries!

2 more issues :

- Free Holders Bank of the Midland District  do not have date range; I found 1837-1838 issues so I put that, I can adapt if needed

- we have 2 Commercial banks (1834 and 1837): I think they are about Brockville and Kingston

Canada Bank (1792!) was hard to spot.

It appears sources call it "Canada Banking Company"

But only image I found shows both “Canada Bank” and “Canada Banking Company” on the note indeed: https://www.coinsandcanada.com/banknotes-articles.php?article=canada-banking-co.,-5-shillings,-1792&id=320

Another tricky thing is when should we input french name also…

For instance the City Bank was called La Banque de la Cité de la cité in french…

I'd go for bilingual names if both appear on the notes.

Sure, let me know if you spot missing ones

I guess a possibility is also that both names were used by same entity but on different banknotes…
