BCW 3-Pocket Storage Sheets Warping Banknotes

Hi, I haven't looked at banknote storage binders in awhile but I just did today and I found that all of my storage sheets had warped and had caused my banknotes to warp (bend) slightly too. I attached some photos to show this. I'm not sure if a slight bent decreases a notes value but my thought is that it probably does. I used the BCW protective pages which seemed pretty safe and legit but now I'm concerned some of my notes have been damaged. Does a slight bend decrease a notes value? and if so, what are some good protective sheets than I could replace mine with moving forward? Thanks.

You could use Leuchtturm sheets instead. I have used them for many years and not a single sheet bend like yours.

Mylar banknote sleeves are better for your banknotes - chemically neutral.

Do these sheets have 3 pockets than fit in a binder? or are they the individual ones?

Since you are from USA, you can check them here - https://www.lighthouse.us

Depending on the binder you use, there are different sheets - https://www.lighthouse.us/collect-coins/coin-albums/

I personally use Numis and Optima system. Numis is A5 format, and Optima is A4. There are 2, 3 or 4  pockets for the Optima system.

The album pages you are using are not the best.

Go with Mylar or Lindner.

Linder are not that good, they tend to get yellowish after several years. Also, some can get a bit fragile and they get broken where the holes are.

Oh boy, not a single collector I know avoided warping of some raw ungraded banknotes. Mostly it is due to climate and occurs heavily in areas that have all four seasons. Most of us collectors dont have expensive aircon/dehumidifier or dessicator boxes with inert gas that make climate stable

I use Leuchtturm banknote pages and albums plus silica beads bags inside and i still see some warping on some banknotes. Why Leuchtturm? They use hard PET which doesnt bend easily, it is stiff like coke bottle and it is not chemically reactive. I avoid mylar because it is too expensive and not so rigid. PP and PVC album pages are the worst solution, especially for polymer banknotes

Usually my banknotes that have large security threads, e.g. Libya 50 dinars with Qaddafi or Fiji 10 dollars polymer banknote have some warping near security threads due to material properties difference at junction with banknote paper/fabric. When temperature of the environment changes there can be a lot of stress in thin material so bending happens. Sometimes i get a “tellers nick” on top of banknotes with large security threads but these banknotes are usually of poorer quality, e.g. Venezuelan bolivar of low denominations. I have no issues with dollar banknotes or any banknote with no security threads or small security threads. These albums and pages are perfect for small to medium size banknotes and almost perdect for large ones.

My advice is to get a banknotes album with pages that are made from hard nonPVC material, store it in a place with no humidity if possible, vertically, add couple of bags of silica beads inside album near ring binders. I use Leuchtturm grande so there is plenty of space inside.

Some of my albums are 50 years old, I have not had the yellowing issue yet - though I have come across it on other inert storage solutions.

They are fragile as you describe. Valuable notes I would put inside a mylar or similar flip holder in the album pockets.

I primarily use ‘Safe’ albums for my heavier collections, all of mine are several decades old, and have worn very well. A couple of the binders have suffered minor damage due to accident, but still in good order.

Just googled, and I see they are still being manufactured! https://www.safepub.com/currency-holders-albums/currency-albums/

I agree with Hibernia put your notes in a holder then in the pages. After that you will never have to handle them with your fingers again. Rearranging pages is easy and inserting new notes in the order you want gives little risk. Most dealers I have dealt with sell notes in holders not loose unless very low value or low grade. When I put low grade notes in holders I try to flatten bended corners so most of the note is visible. It is an added cost but keeping notes free of finger oils will keep them higher grade. The holder should stop the curving pages.

Thanks for all of the ideas. My only issue with the lighthouse banknote sheets is that each slip is only 2 ¾ inches which barely fits a standard US bill. I have many notes that are slightly over 2 ¾ inches that would not fit so I probably can't go with that one.

The safe currency sleeves have 3 pockets that are each about 3 ¾ inches which is perfect but the only issue is that they are pricy considering they'd probably be worth more than some of the banknotes that they are holding.

I might just buy enough of the lighthouse sheets to hold my US bills and some of my foreign currency and then buy a few of the safe sleeves for some of my larger currency.

Yeah, I do the same thing. For my more valuable notes I put them in individual sleeves before putting them in my binder.

I have my all banknotes in lighthouse grande  album sheets. The material of these sheets is the best available in the market for collectors. It can fit 100 reichsmark third reich banknotes into 3 pocket sleeves easily, and they are double the size of a dollar. Just buy a larger album. I even store my university degrees and transcripts for years in them without any issues. For graded notes, 2 pocket sheets are the best.

I avoid bcw because they are overpriced and too soft. Material is ok quality but just that. I havent seen that they protect some banknotes from humidity or warping at all. I can see edges of some low quality banknotes becoming wavy in them.

You  european guys are so lucky, with the big choice/range of systems

Down here in New Zealand we do not have that range of albums ,or pages at reasonable prices

My collection of almost 100 binders is housed in

Marbig 3D binders (colour coordinated for continent etc) and BCW pages 3 pocket,4 pocket and 20 pocket for coins.BCW seems to work fine for me in sub -tropical climate (no low temperatures, frost or snow) but no excessive heat   (12-28 degrees) BCW is often not availiable and we have to get it from the states (postage is wicked)-I am waiting for alot of 140 pages to arrive and it cost $65 US including postage

We live right by the sea(yes fishing?swimming from our front lawn, when the tide is in) and i use a dehumidifier often

the small Marbig folders are about $1.30US each all colours
