A Mannequin? Is it German? Possible pre WWII?

My son in law's mother has been using this mannequin for many years as part of her methods of making clothes and dresses.

She would now like to put a little of it's history with this mannequin, so I have been asked to help solve the enigma. I told my son in law that all of the experts are on the Numista website, and I would ask for your help.

Trying to translate the wording in the photograph and the reason for the ‘46’

Many thanks to anyone who can help in anyway

Hello, this might be quite difficult.

As you probably already know, the writing is the name and address of the business that produced it.

It reads: L. Hülss, Inh. (owner) Ch. Laegel

                 Berlin (8)54 Weinbergsweg 21 (address)

                 Fernruf B(or 8)1 Norden 5903

A quick google search was not enough for the answer. Maybe someone else knows a bit more about it.

Judging by the word „Fernruf“, probably a antiquated word for Telephone call, it must quite old, ww2 or before would be quite fitting.

Actually, I did not realise that it was an address, so that in itself is very interesting. That is that little bit solved, but now the “46” is the enigma and date.

One out of three is a great start.

Surely 46 is the dress size?

So making a dress say 38 size would need a smaller mannequin.

Hi,

"Fernruf" is indeed an antiquated form of phone call ("distance-call").

Regarding the “46” I guess it could be the size of the piece of cloth you are tailoring on it. So there should existe “42”, “44” or “48” etc. manakins for smaller or bigger sizes.

Regards and happy hollidays!!!

That is a good thought. My wife said it might be 46 inch bust size, but mannequin looks too small for that, but as it looks like it's pre-WWII, it could be a German size.

Last number is a 2 and looks like B1 before it.

What does Inh and Ch actually stand for. Must be abbreviations for something

A previous reply said abbreviation Inh = owner

Maybe the Ch is the first name of that owner.

L. Hülss [business name]

Owner: Christian Laegel

So, then, what is the L initial …

Also - was that the dressmaker who used it, or the mannequin maker?

Fernruf is just proper German it's literally the translation of telephone or ‘far voice/call’ the same like Fernseher instead of television or 'far seer'.

It's from a time where you still had ‘Fräuleins’ that took your call and transferred you to the right telephone line in this case D1 North section telephone line 5903.
