Is it ok to clean coins ?

By coins, I dont mean ancient, antique type coins. I mean regular modern coins and not precious metals. 

It's really a personal choice, but be aware that if you ever decide to sell the coins you've cleaned, you'll have drastically reduced your target buying group.  On top of that, they will be worth significantly less.

But if they are just for you and you prefer the look, then who is anyone else to judge.  That said, in my opinion, if the collector value is more than a dollar, I would just leave it.

It also really depends on what you mean by cleaning. Removing foreign material should be done to reduce possible deterioration as long as no coin substance is damaged while doing it and there lies the problem. You have to know what you are doing and when not to do anything.

From some of the older members of my coin club, some of whom have been in the hobby since the 1960s, they say it would depend on the manner. “Dipping” as in dipping the coin in cleaning chemicals was once common among dealers in the USA. Today “dipping” skirts the line of ok or not ok to do. But if all youre doing is washing them off in water or soap to get stuff off them ( such as gum or oil or some other material) i dont think its an issue. With Ancient coins there is a proper methodology of cleaning them so that in of its self would be another discussion. However as far as modern coins go just soap and water wont hurt or a little bit of dipping to remove some nasty toning is acceptable to me. As long as youre not taking a coin to a strip of sand paper or a grinder or polishing machine its fine in my opinion.
