Old Greece(?) coins: real or fake? [solved]

5 posts • viewed 489 times

Hi again,

In my collection I have three ancient Greek(?) coins, but I don't know if they are real or fake.

The only thing I know for sure is that I have owned these coins for about 60 years.

Can someone tell me more about them?

Thanks in advance.

Hello!

Hi FeeFoo,

I have two more questions about my coins:

1/ do all three of them have a catalog or Numista number?

(If so, can you please send me the link?)

2/ can you also tell me why exactly you think they all look fake?

Hello

The first one I believe is fake because the surface looks all cracked and plated.

The othershave a suspicious color and patina to them and they also look plated.

Here is the link to the middle coin

1) https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/athena_numismatics/18/product/syria_antioch_nero_ad_5468_ar_tetradrachm/1561970/Default.aspx

2) An Athenian owl, denomination depends on size and weight. Either an obol, drachm or tetradrachm. Check in the Numista catalogue here: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=grece_antique&r=athens+owl&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=&b=&d=&ie=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=

3) Alexander the Great. Again, denomination depends on size and weight. There are too many different variations of this coin struck in his lifetime or posthumous to list here. Someone with more knowledge of the subject might be able to give you a more precise example which coin this is or better yet, what its trying to replicate.

I agree with FeeFoo, judging by the coins surface they all look like replicas to me.

I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
