Varieties of Italian 500 Lire 1966 coin? [solved]

3 posts • viewed 224 times

Hi,

I'm looking at the Italian 500 Lire silver coin N#2716, and for 1966 it says ‘varieties exist’. Looking around, I see the same entry, e.g.in the NGC world coin price guide,  but I can't seem to find what those varieties might be.  Any pointers/ knowledge on this anyone?

Many thanks.

Hi!

In an old Italian catalogue those varieties are described as: vanishing lettering and ship (the last one), without flags on the flagpole and without crosses on the flags.

These varieties seem to be due to weak strike/worn die.

Hi Anto,

Fantastic, thank very much indeed for solving that mystery for me! :)
