Chinese 1 Cash? Confirmation needed, please. [solved]

8 posts • viewed 84 times

Hi folks! I have used the search by image function, which leads me to believe this is a Chinese 1 Cash coin. However, I find the characters quite confusing and cannot identify it. Its very worn state does not help. I do not know the weight or composition, but the diameter is 25mm. Any help would be appreciated. Before you ask - it cost me nothing. 🙂 Thanks, AY

Thanks, Olli! I've just packed my coins away, but will have a close look tomorrow. My gut feeling is that it's not that one. Would the characters on all cash coins be basically the same, I wonder? I know nothing about them, even down to why the distinction is made in calling them “Cash” coins, as opposed to any other form of Chinese money. Hopefully I will learn something here. Thanks again, and I'll certainly have a close look tomorrow. All the best, AY

You might get an overview in Numisdoc

Thanks, Frenchlover! I had no idea such a resource existed on Numista. Thank-you. I found the China article most enlightening. Still, it won't help me get Chinese characters which are hard for someone brought up on a steady diet of English. I guess Chinese folks might say something similar. Strange, I can't read it, but I have no trouble deciphering Arabic…

I agree with the ID made by Ollisaarinen.

Hi Ollisaarinen & Seeker55! I have examined my coin against the one you suggest (and others) and agree that this is the same coin. Thanks for your help. I'll leave the topic open should anyone else have anything to add. All the best, AY

Hi! Rightly or wrongly, I have identified this coin as Hartill#22.542

Due to my lack of familiarity with Chinese characters and the worn state of the coin, I am happy to be corrected. Thanks.
