Need help with some indian and arabic coins [solved]

4 posts • viewed 397 times

Hi folks, if someone can help me identify these, I would really appreciate it. Weights and sizes are as shown. The top row look like Indian Dam coins (judjing by appearance and weights). They are all in Arabic except potentially #4, which could be Sanscrit, but if you turn it 90^ CCW, might be Arabic. Not a lot of detail on that one.

The bottom row look like they may be Persian or further south. The script is visibly different and the weights don't match the Indian standards. The last one is silver and again, the weight doesn't match Indian Rupee standards.

I think these are all  from India. During India's long history with about 100 kingdoms and about 1000 rulers, many weight systems for coins have been used.

For number 1 check Maratha Confederacy, “do-dundi” coins

For Coin 2, I think it's a paisa of the Sultans of Dehli, Sher Shah Suri.  It's quite similar, but not an exact match, for both of these two

As for Coin 4, based on the weight, diameter, and general appearance I suspect it is a copper dam of Akbar. When the first photo is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise there appears to be a number 83, which might indicate the year AH 983.

For Coin 6 it's a ⅔ gani of the Bahmani Sultans, Shams al-Din Muhammad III, Goron/Goenka BH115.

For coin ID requests it's best to list one coin per thread.

Thank you gentlemen, you gave me enough to go on to be able to piece this together. So, I believe this is pretty correct:

1 Maratha Confederacy 2 paisa 1788-1816

2 Delhi Sultanate 2 Paisa. There is a date on this, the minimum could be AH826, which takes us back to the 1420, early Sayyid dynasty. but it could be 40 years later as that could be a 6 in the middle, so early Lodi dynasty.

3 Punjab area, 1 takka, one of the small states. I didn't get an exact match, but early 1800's looks likely

4 Akbar, 1 Dam, 1575, looks to be from the Narnol mint
5 Bahmani Sultanate, 1 Gani 1440's
6 Bahmani Sultanate, 2/3 Gani 1460's
7 Delhi Sultanate 1 Tanka 1362

As an added bonus for those that may not know and despite what I said earlier, the copper coin weights are fairly  consistent over the course of 4 centuries represented here. The basic unit of measure being 5 and a bit grams = ½ Paisa = ¼ Dam = ¼ Takka = ⅓ Gani. The Bahmanis seemed to like to deal in thirds.
