Value of American Silver Eagles. [solved]

What are your thoughts? Should I get the money together and jump on this?

I have a friend that wants to sell 200 silver eagles, and he thought he would get spot price for them. $22 per coin.

I told him I thought he could get $35 per coin.

I called a local coin dealer that I heard pays ok and he offered $5,400, more than I expected, $27 per coin.

He is thinking about doing that because he doesn't want to deal with all the low baller's and vultures.

I want to buy some but I don't have that much to spend. Also I have always paid spot price for silver eagles in the past, but something in the market has changed because now you can't even find any to buy anymore.

I guess I could buy them and sell off half so I could get some?

My advice: tell your friend to sell to the dealer at $27 each. Better yet, negotiate up to 28 or 29. The dealer can flip those Eagles in a matter of hours. You could buy them from your friend at 27 and try to flip them for 30+ each (but that's not very friendly).

Eagles are in high demand the last couple years. Stackers drove up the price. You wont find them at spot from any dealer or show. Major retailers like Apmex and JM Bullion are getting at least 10 bucks over spot right now. Also, at todays spot your friend can probably get $30 each on Reddit. And if he takes his time and sells on ebay he can get 30 each. But if he wants to play it safe just sell to the dealer and take the cash. No fuss no muss.

How do you sell on reddit?

You think the newer ones are more valuable? I always assumed that the older ones  would be more valuable? I’d want  older ones myself, the older the better!

1) join reddit

2) join this subreddit:

3) follow their instructions

Some reddit groups (including /r/coins4 sale) are on “strike” right now so it might take awhile to get approved, but it's a big group with many active sales.

But again, Eagles are so hot right now and your friend has a large quantity. Go back to that dealer and offer the whole lot for sale at $30 apiece and walk out if he says no. The dealer can flip those Eagles in a matter of hours so dont take a lowball offer!

Value depends on many things. Date, mint, condition, Proof or UNC, etc. As a collector and not a stacker, I would pay only slightly over spot for some and more generously for others. Dates that I want for instance.

Harryg is right that some dates mintmarks varities etc are more desirable than others and carry a higher premium. 1986 for example is tje first year and very desirable.

However, a dealer wont care. A dealer will take a cursory look at the rolls of Eagles, count them, and make an offer for the lot. So you'll get up to 30 bucks a pop times 200 pieces or 6,000 bucks cash for the lot. If you want more money then it takes more legwork. Go through each roll, pull the better dates and list them on ebay. Then you have ebay fees, taxes, packaging and shipping costs plus trips to the PO. You really want to do all that?

If you want a quick flip, sell them as a lot to a dealer. Depends how much work you want to put ino it. But I guarantee the dealer has a wait list a mile long of buyers who want those rolls and they dont care what year etc.

I agree with you here. Thanks for the advice!
