Identification of Indian banknote issues numbers. For example: 1st or 2nd issue

8 posts • viewed 102 times

Morning all, am in the process of buying a couple of 2 rupee notes and it seems, based on serial numbers of each note, that each belong to different issues (according to the seller). For example, the note below, is apparently the second issue of this type.

17R12

While this note, is the first issue.

There must be some reference that tells you how to decipher these serial numbers into years of printing and offcourse the issue number.

Is anyone aware of such reference material?

Try Numista it should have all the relevant information you seek. 😉

Already have. I viewed this link N#202678

It contains the variations of the note, but no information on issue number.

On a completely different note (pun intended 😃), given the number of posts you have made, I realise you probably do not mean to come across as a ‘smart alec’ with your response, but consider this - its like saying (with a bit of a stretch) ‘have you tried Googling it’?

I would have said ‘Google is your friend’ but close enough 😜.

From your sentence I read that you don't know how to distinguish the types but the serial number is not what sets these notes apart. Value numbers, window shapes and incorrect spelling of words does and those informations are explained on the catalog pages. Only a very few countries/issues have enough information about print runs to read years and more from serials and older Indian banknotes aren't on that short list as far as I know.

Understood. So it's kinda like niche information that I'm searching for. Hmmm… okay, thanks for trying mate, much appreciated.

I have a small reference book for Indian banknotes. Will check and get back.

Apologies for the hastily clicked photos. Could have been better.

I am guessing the prefix sequence is indicative of the time it was printed. Till the next new note is printed this sequence probably goes on.

Thank you very much for your information. I have resolved to purchase this book - knowledge is king in this hobby.
