Hello
I would like to request the addition of a new issuer for a coin that was recently submitted to the Roman Provinces.
Thank you in advance
- the name of the issuer in English (and if possible also in French and Spanish)
En: Romula
Fr: Romula
Sp: Romula
It should be under Roman Provinces > Hispania > Baetica > Romula (City/Colonia)
The full name was Colonia Julia Romula Hispalensis and it also appears in auctions sometimes as just Hispalis.
- its Wikidata code (for example, Q854 for Sri Lanka)
Q100422615
- if there are no entries yet on Numista, the link to an auction site or a reference catalogue presenting at least one coin or banknote from this issuer
https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/search/browse?city_id=916
- if they already exist in the catalogue, the link of one or more Numista records that you want to classify under this issuer
- if necessary, the list of other issuers to be linked by “see also” links
Seville
- if possible, a brief introduction presenting the history of this issuer with any numismatic considerations useful to the reader
Colonia Iulia Romula Hispalensis was an ancient Roman city, continuing the previous Iberian city of Hispalis, situated on the site of modern-day Seville in Andalucia, Spain. According to legend, Hispalis was founded by the Tartessians in the 7th century BC as Ispal or Spalis and was inhabited by Greeks and Phoenicians for the next centuries. In 216 BC it was occupied by Carthage in the Second Punic War, and soon after, in 206 BC, it was conquered by the Romans in the Battle of Ilipa. The Romans rebuilt it and renamed it Hispalis. Julius Caesar proclaimed it a Roman Colonia in 45 BC and the city became one of the most important centres in Hispania Baetica. The city was eventually conquered by the Vandals in 426 and renamed Spalis.
Its monetary issue consists of a single series minted during the reign of Emperor Tiberius.
