Metal detecting

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first metal detector!

It is the Nokta Makro Simplex+, and it works very well. However, i only found trash.

Yesterday evening i became aware you need to search for the consistent and high conductivity ID's (80-99) if you want to find coins (and not trash). I tried it (notched out 01-75 and full sensitivity on field mode), got a few 77 signals that were not consistent at all, tried to dig one of them up, could not find it (i don't have a pinpointer).

My house is quite old, around 200 years if i remember correctly. Before that also numerous houses have stood on the place my house stands, so i don't think it is an issue of history or lack of “things in the ground”.

Does anyone have anymore tips on finding coins with a metal detector? What should i notch out?

Thanks in advance,

TheRegularCoiner

Years ago I got a cheap metal detector as a prize when my parents visited a place and I used a screwdriver to find the  iitems  iin the dirt. There are many videos on how to detect on youtube.

Thanks, will browse some more.

Adjust the Settings if your machine can do it to filter out all the low sounding iron noises.

house areas are often full of old trash and iron pieces such as nails etc.

Coins usually will have a higher frequency sound bit some can be lower as well, found a celtic coin in my garden once which read at 40 or so.

ive had a Garret AT Gold for years but in recent years rarely use it as laws in most of Europe are quite fierce and I do not want to get in any trouble.

Hey, same here with the  Nokta Makro Simplex+ !
From my experience, not digging signals under 80 is a very bad idea. Most copper coins I find are in the 30s to 40s, the only silver I ever had was a clean 54. 2 Euros are usually a 77 from my experience, other euros are in the 60s.

I personally do not dig anything from 90-20, mostly trash in my experience. A good pinpointer is a must, it really makes finding your signal so much easier.

My area is unfortunately not very good for detecting, a lot of other detectorists fighting over the few remaining fields

I hope you find something great!

Ok, thanks for your advice, will “denotch” a bunch of frequencies!

I will need to save a bit more money then…

What mode do you use while detecting (curious in which modes these id's apply)? I have Park 2 around my house. I have tested it on a Duit i bought recently (should be able to find that), shows 71-74, while it is copper. Today i tried finding something, but only a large piece of iron (?) and a bit of can. Maybe it is because of location?

Hi, I usually use the field mode everywhere I go as I feel like it produces the best results.

Yes, the detector often picks up very large chunks of metal as good signals, I think all of them do.

I do really know how to explain it, but after some time you get a feeling wether the signal is good or not, the best way to learn would just be to use it.

I would say that good signals are usually short and crisp, if the signals change while you are swinging above it is also a sign that it is not that good. I would also highly recommend always using the pinpoint function of your detector before even starting to dig, you will see how big the object is (especially important in areas with unexploded ordinance). I would not dig huge signals.

If you have any question, feel free to post them, I would love to help if possible.

Here is a prussian 1 Pfenning coin I found recently:

Here is a more dangerous find:

(remains of a british phosporus bomb (can’t remember the model) Obviously I disposed of it with the help of the proper authorities, you should never keep potentially dangerous finds, empty cartridges are fine

I think this will really help. Will detect on field mode :)!

Cool (and dangerous) finds! Will try more tomorrow.

Hi Wertinas,

I found a button!!

Very close to a coin (it isn't complete trash like my other “finds”, i think i am on the right track. Id was 40-50.

*inspecting a Roman mintmark*

Just got a mini detection session, it is raining and there is thunder now, i picked this signal. It had a small pinpoint area but otherwise i was sceptical about the swings in the ID's but i am glad i dug it up. This was my first dig actually!!

Very nice!

Thats a very pretty button, congrats. Looks enamelled
