Peparethos in Ancient Greece
- if possible, a brief introduction presenting the history of this issuer with any numismatic considerations useful to the reader
Peparethus, previously known as Euoinos, and currently named Skopelos, is an island in the western Aegean Sea, part of the Northern Sporades group. It is situated north of Euboea, and is part of Thessaly. According to legend, Peparethus was colonised by settlers from Crete led by Staphylos. It was later a colony of the Euboean Khalkis. In the classical period, in the 4th century BC, Peparethus was part of the Athenian-led maritime confederation of Delos. The island was damaged during the Peloponnesian War in 426 BC in an earthquake. From the 370s BC, it belonged to the Second Athenian League. Alexander the Great attacked the island in 362/361 BC. In 342 BC, the Peparethosians captured Halonnesos, which was under Macedonian rule, at the instigation of the Athenians. However, Philip II took it back and raised Peparethus in 340 BC. The island probably came under Macedonian control in 338 BC. Philip V established a garrison on Peparethos during the Hellenistic period in 207 BC, to defend the island from the Romans, but destroyed it in 200 BC to avoid it being captured. After 146 BC, Peparethus came under Roman administration.
The city minted its own silver coins from the 4th century BC and bronze coins from the 3rd century BC. The island minted a single Roman provincial bronze issue, under the rule of Augustus. Coins of Peparethus depict god Bacchus (Dionysus) in reference to the reputed wine produced on the island.
