Coins with surface damage

I have a few coins with surface damage. How do I grade them?

Especially if I put them on the swap list.

Will someone even be interested in the coins with surface damage caused by PVC, rust, gum, or verdigris?

I have these coins with some damage …. Bought them on e-bay … they had some sticky substance on their surface. I've washed them with mild soap and a soft toothbrush.

How should I grade them? Should I try and get a replacement for them?

There are more coins with minor or significant rust damage. what shall I do with them?🤔

Gum can be taken of with acetone…. which you can also try on the other damaged coins.

While they will probably clean up nicely, I feel it's a little pointless buying coins with surface damage for more than face value, or expecting much as a swap for common coins like these. Grading them would probably be pointless in my opinion

I don't think it is gum. But if I try to clean it with acetone, how long is it safe to dip a coin in acetone?

I tried cleaning a few of my cheap coins by dipping them for a few hours in acetone but nothing happened. Do I need to rub them with cotton buds after soaking them?

These coins are not so common here in India. At least not in my circle here.  And at this point, I just want to get knowledge on how to take care of my coins. I started my collection a long time ago, as a kid, but they were lying in storage. Just recently I've restarted this hobby and I seems like I don't know the ABCD of managing my coins.

Need to get as much knowledge as I can. 😁

You also might live in one of the worst climates for coin collecting (humid and hot). If that's the case you might want to only collect gold and other inert coins. 😅

Or put oil on all of them and keep them in a dehumidifier.

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

The climate here (Delhi, India) is extreme type but its hot and humid for less than a month. The problem is with coins I've bought on e-bay India. 😢

I tried cleaning them with ….

  • Soapy water and toothbrush
  • Olive oil
  • Acetone
  • WD40
  • Boiling water
  • Vinegar and salt

I tried scratching these marks with a filler to see how deep are these marks. They are not deep.

Please suggest what else can I try.

I fear those are beyond curing. I suggest get some new ones, fortunately they are not that hard to get and give them a very thin layer of vaseline.

I would like to advice you not to clean any coins that you want to swap. Just swap them as they are.

The process of cleaning can always be done by the new owner!

Cents are money too!
