Banknote numbering. Why the change?

I noticed a change in the numbering. EG Lebanon always had a P#89. P#85 etc.

Now it shows as TBB#548a.

North Korea P#59 now CS11

Philippines from P#210 to now TBB#1093 etc

Why get away from the P numbering system?

Thanks for your reply.

Ben

I would think that P numbers ought not to be deleted when adding other numbers.

The P number banknotes were not deleted. The other reference number pages were added (maybe split from the P number page).  For example:

N#204782

N#232128

rsirian1

The P number banknotes were not deleted. The other reference number pages were added (maybe split from the P number page).  For example:

N#232128

This note (2020-2022) may post-date scwpm, and not have a P ref number.

I don't have scwpm to hand, so cannot check it.

The other note is older, and in both references.

There are a large number of P# references in Numista that are "fabricated".  They do not appear in the SCWPM, but appear on other sites such as Colnect with these “fabricated” (best guess) P# numbers.

My personal opinion is that we should delete any P# references that do not actually appear in a SCWPM, and should not be copying the “fabricated” P#s from other sites.

When ever I see made-up numbers or sub-types I delete them and, if applicable, replace them with the standard reference numbers.

Agree completely with this.

I tend to agree with this.  People are trying keep the Pick numbers alive.

I should mention one thing not mentioned yet.  There ARE legitimate new numbers assigned for Pick!  The owner maintains a database for these & at least PMG uses these.  I assume they bought the rights to do so.  When I release the pdf of all the IBNS bank note of the year (BNOY) nominees each year for the IBNS, I do include these numbers, as well as the TBB numbers. The crux of the problem is with no new release of Pick ever in sight, what use are such numbers?

BTW, the pdf's mentioned I also add to my web page for those interested in knowing what security features are present with images of many on new releases.  My main web page is here:

Who is it that is maintaining this database?

An advantage of using the P numbers is that the entirety of the catalogue is available in a 3 volumes - a relatively inexpensive way to have a catalogue of world notes available.

What some collectors may not realize is that when F+W Media sold Krause publications (including the “Pick” catalogs), the sale split ownership of the Pick number data base to Active Interest Media (AIM), and the publishing rights for SCWPM to Penguin. There has been no signs that Penguin intends to publish the SCWPM anytime soon, but AIM continues to manage the Pick# data base, and PMG pays AIM for use of this Pick# data base to this day. AIM owns the right to continue to issue new Pick numbers.  One company owning the database and another the publishing rights virtually guarantees that Pick is dead.

It's a mess & we cannot go back in time.  Essentially, new Pick numbers are maintained but cannot be referenced - accept for PMG on slabbed notes.  The only up to date general catalog is The Bank Note Book (TBB).  As most know, this set of chapters is nearly complete, less a few large countries.  I say complete, but for the most part this does not include what SCWPM called Specialized Issues (PS numbered notes).  There are also gaps in issuing authorities on many countries, so, while there exists a chapter for a country, there is no guarantee it is complete.

A pity about scwpm.

And the cost of TBB is prohibitive for anyone collecting world notes in general.

One thing that occurs to me is that numista may well become a standard reference in the future, and it might be worth establishing its own system of catalogue numbers. Being free access, it would be available to all as an easy reference.

Regarding this, I was considering making my own standardised numbering system a few months ago due to frustration with newer notes being largely unavailable in the Pick system. I ultimately decided that I cannot, since I do not have the time nor resources nor energy to do so. I also think that a system created by Numista would be an excellent addition, and I’d love to help work on it if it does become a feature.

Yes, the cost of TBB is indeed prohibitive. But TBB's “target audience” are dealers, not collectors. For dealers, it's just “the cost of doing business."

Having said that what has annoyed me the most is the fact that you cannot download the chapters anymore since Linzmayer sold out to Greysheet. I subscribed to TBB a few weeks before he sold. During my subscription period I was still able to download chapters. But when it was time to renew the download option was gone. Hence, I did not renew.

Regarding the ability to download chapters  I do not know the present situation.

Yes, that would be a very good idea!

A couple of things.

TBB

1> It IS still downloadable as pdf , I download revised Chapters every Friday when they send the revision email out.  It's even easier now to download.  Just click the arrow in the top left corner.

2> Join IBNS.  IBNS members get TBB at a big discount.  The IBNS Journal alone is worth the $36 adult cost.

3> If you already have a TBB subscription & don't see the download arrow, an email to Greysheet requesting downloads will get this done.

Numista

1> “Coins, banknotes and pieces of exonumia in the Numista catalogue are assigned a unique number, denoted as “N#”. This number uniquely identifies a type of coin, banknote or exonumia. It is visible on the pages of the Numista catalogue.”

2> As long as you're dealing with a fellow Numista member, no problem!

3> How many Numista members are there?  I ask because this is the problem.  Universal acceptance of a reference number requires a BUNCH of collectors using the system.  True, you don't have to join to utilize the data (or a reference #) and it's free to join anyhow.

Is it still possible to download? As I can't find the download icon at all.
I am using Chrome. Or do I need to use a different web browser?

I believe the icon on the top left of the image, that of an arrow pointing to a tray, is the download link you are looking for.

Any suggestions on how to download is definitely welcome, would make it much easier as the chapter somehow keeps reloading.

You could try Ctrl+Shift and click the page to see if you get a ‘save as’ prompt.

If that doesn't work, then I would suggest emailing them to sort the issue.

Digital access does not include the ability to download the publication for archival purposes.

I think I read somewhere that only old subscriptions before they were acquired have that ability.

I am not a fan of subscriptions (and 3 months is minimum) so I will most likely never get this one.

Thank you for the suggestions. I emailed Greysheet and now I am able to download the files again.

May I ask whether you were an old subscriber (subscriber before Linzmayer sold to Greysheet) or a new subscriber?

Glad you got sorted.

I am not into the subscription model, I prefer a good old fashioned hard copy book!

Numista.com has 245,000 registered users. Give or take…

Library Media Specialist, columnist, collector, and gardener...

245,000 members is large.  One wonders how many of these are banknote collectors rather than coin collectors…..

Sorry for the late reply as I didn't check this forum for a long time. I am an old subscriber before Owen sold to Greysheet. Also contributed for a few Asian chapters.

As we say here in Germany: Better late than never. 😉

So, thanks for answering. I appreciate it.

Let's add in the T.B.B. catalogue numbers as well.

Aidan.
