One rule for “Additions to your collection”

It’s not really gonna be a rule, just a guideline. Nobody likes rules!

These “additions to your collection“ threads  are great! They have been going on for some years now. I remember when they first started.

However, I’ve noticed that most people just post their addition without any further comments. I would like to introduce an idea going forward. Let each person first make a comment on someone else’s newest acquisition. It doesn’t have to be the one right above you, everyone can say what they want about anyone else’s coins, one person might get 10 comments, someone else might not get any comments, that’s fine. just as long as they say something positive about someone else’s newest acquisition.
I don’t want to just see what you guys are getting, I wanna know what y’all think about other peoples collections too.

The format would look something like this-

“ hey Chuck, your copper penny looks awesome. I love that design and year, great patina!

Hey, I just picked up this Roman coin, I’ve been trying to get one for years and found it at the coin shop for a bargain!    Insert photo here…”

What do y’all think?

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Yeah it sounds good because it gives context.

Moneytane is a great example with all the backstory and history of each coin and banknote he purchases.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

I will endeavor to do that.

sometimes it will be “Nice coin OP, here is my latest score.” that has to be ok too.

I hope you dont mind “that coin reminds me of my youth” replies, I know I do that too much.

That all sounds good to me Mr Midnight, as long as it’s positive.

I like this suggestion. We are all information junkies and a little context goes a long way.

I think its a great idea & try to practice posting like this myself with banknotes. I don't collect coins but I still see some amazing adds here & always like to add positive comments about collecting.

+1 (yes, it enriches the forum & Moneytane's recent adds are a great example)

But there's still a lot of Numista members who refrain from practicing simple forum etiquette. There's many still posting with titles like “VALUE?” instead of “Value of 20 Euro?” or adding minor details.  It doesn't take much to create a rich forum environment but many members seem to be in a rush (or not putting much thought into their new threads).

Anyway, I hope others see this idea & adopt it.

I agree generally with the idea, but I must also say that the three times I started the “Additions” thread (once in English and twice in French) I felt an obligation to comment on others' additions as the month progressed when no-one else did. On one of my French posts I even added a small concluding post and looked forward to what the next month might bring.

Also, most of the time, when I add a new acquisition, I like to start with “Nice additions 👆👆👆”.

One thing that I find quite rude is when you identify a coin for someone and they don't even return to say at least “Thank you”. Sometimes you know the have seen your post because they come back just to mark the thread as solved. I think I'll start marking those people as not worthy of my time in the future…

Very valid points raised.

It's nice, but it doesn't have to be a rule. I post heaps of things I consider very nice and worthy of attention, and get little or no reaction. I don't mind as I know my interests are not everyone else's cup of tea. Yet I do feel impelled to always post a nice comment when I see something I really like.

But some people are just not that communicative, or don't feel like it. I respect that, whereas others love it. Fortunately what I like about Numista - is that no comment is better than a negative one. On the Information thread and people and trollers who show fake coins or Chinese made junk ones - there can be some criticism - but you never see it here in our additions thread. If someone comments on a coin I have posted, its always positive or at least asking a question. A good example was me posting a USA flying eagle cent in August and I thought it was great. Turns out someone had posted an even better one of the same year (1857) a few days earlier and I praised this coin, as it must have slipped my mind and I was pleasantly surprised to see the owner of that coin praise mine as well!

That is missing on a lot of other forum boards. On CCF, I posted a very nice, but bumped and dinged halfcrown and some clown criticised it saying it was ugly and rubbish and how daft I was to think it was nice. A few people took my side, but the moderators got all nasty and blasted them for being off topic!

Also if people show a post with hundreds of “accumulation or bulk” coins, are we supposed to praise that? I think people here use their common sense and usually a nice or interesting item gets praised.

I don't mind one way or the other. I post things I like and if someone else does too - thats great, but it does not matter if there are no comments, my coins are still there for posterity! Also Numista does not cover every coin collector in the world and there are many people out there, who will always like what you show them - just they have not seen it or Numista yet.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
