6 x R1 Silver Coins Dated 1966 + 5 x R1 Silver Coins Dated 1967

Hello Members.  My Dad passed away 20 year ago and I have eventually built up the courage to work through the last if his valuables.

There are many R1 coins here, but from what I have read the many we have dated between 1997 and 1990 have no real value.  Could someone here please comment on this?

We then have 6 x R1 Silver Coins dated 1966  +  R5 x Silver Coins dated 1967, which appear to have some value.

How to we sell these.  I would think that the newer coins would be worth more than their face value of R1 but if not, what do you suggest we do with them as the shops would not take them lol.  Hold onto them?

The second batch of the real silver coins - do they have more value and if so, a guideline of approximate value would be sincerely appreciated plus advise on where we could sell these?

I would sincerely appreciate the input and advice.

Thank You

Claerwen

I'm sure you talk about RSA rand coins. Did you look them up in the numista database: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=afrique_du_sud&r=&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=1+rand&i=&b=&d=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=&ie=

Did you look them up in the KM catalog 1901-2000 (local library):

In 1967 there were no 5 rand coins of any type!

Pictures would help.

As for selling them, Can you get on E-bay there? Can you do international postage and payments?

That is the global market place for coin collectors, and you can get good money, like US$15-20 each for the silver pieces.

The nickel ones, sorry to say , far less.

I’ll buy them

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

What are R1 coins? I thought you were talking about rupees?

You need to realise this is a GLOBAL board and you need to state the currency and country its from, as we are not psyhics or coin fontes.

Photos help.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

The original poster is from South Africa.

‘R1’ is the short way of indicating ‘1 Rand’.

Aidan.

One rand coins issued between 1961 and 1964 were the gold half sovereign ones issued in proof sets only and these were issued up to around 1980. The circulation coins up to and including 1970 were 80% silver and a generous size. Issued from 1965 to 1970, they featured South African Presidents (1967 - 1970) and also Jan Van Riebeck (1965 - 1969). Reverses showed a leaping springbok or a coat of arms. These coins have value as precious silver is in them.

However in 1970 they switched to cupro nickel and these coins were issued from 1970 through to 1989. 29mm in size and with the Springbok and R1 on reverse, the obverses again featured occasionally presidents, and usually the coat of arms. Coins were bilingual and in the earlier coins (Pre 1970) and Presidental obverses issued either in Afrikaans (Suid Afrika) or English (South Africa). One rand notes were issued concurrently until 1978.

In 1989/1990 the 1 rand coins were shrunk down to 21mm and made of cheaper steel. Hence why the 1990 and 1997 were worthless. Back in the 70s a rand was over a dollar, today its 11.2 rand to a NZD which is about 18 to a US$

I got so carried away with tehnicalities I forgot 2 answer the question!
