Hi all,

I just got what I hope to be this: N#207407

The note is off centre  and a bit at an angle, but I suppose that'd be within limits. What I find more curious is an apparent watermark which I cannot find anything about. Picture and Scans below.

As banknotes are not my area per se, I'd be grateful for any pointers and opinions on what I have here!

Thanks in advance and best,

53th0s

My best guess is that someone did not think to add the watermark on the Numista page. I also could not confirm there being a watermark on the note, as I do not have one in my collection. Great find in beautiful condition!

hello, I know it's not directly connected with the object of this thread (watermark), but can anyone please tell me how to find the F printer mark ?? I've been looking at pictures all over Internet for an hour, but I surrender : I cannot spot it.

This image is taken from the Numista page, P#194a, and it's supposed to have it … please tell me where it is :

Thank you very much :(

When I created the page I new of no watermark and the time afterward nobody else added their findings, so be the first.

I will have a look at my specimen if it looks similar to morrow.

And here is the, to be honest, strange looking F for Forbes Lithograph.

Thanks for your kind reply, but I still cannot see it in the specimen that I posted, which comes from the Numista page under “A” type.

Is it an error ?

It's just wrong, many Katz auction entries are either wrong or undetermined.

I also had a look at my specimen and I can't see any watermark, also not on my 50 Pfennig or 1 Mark note. Maybe the watermark was only on certain places of the print sheet or different allies printed on different paper or changes were made over to course of production.

I checked some notes on eBay and now I can see it, at last…!! 🎉

Thank you very much for your help !

I also wanted to edit Numista page, but someone else already did with your picture in the comments.

Back to the watermark business, here's a picture of my banknotes.

They are in very bad shape, but you can see there really IS a watermark !!

Another thread a bout an Austrian allied note has brought me to a catalog page that states two watermarks and it's likely they used the same paper:

watermark: "MILITARY AUTHORITY" (Forbes American issue)

watermark: wavy lines (British issue)

Maybe that's what is written on 53th0s' note?

Yesterday I carefully looked, and it seemed to me there were some …. LETTERS…. written.

But I thought it was just the dirt…

Now we have a confirmation

It's the closest that makes sense, though to be honest I find it hard to decipher.

Unfortunately I don't have the notes here at the moment, but I got a mix of US and USSR issues across denominations and also happy to confirm that the US issues all show the immensely difficult to find ‘f’ but not the others.
