Need help identifying two ancient/medieval coins

2 posts • viewed 93 times

I recently acquired four coins and I need help identifying the last two.  The two I could identify (N#38271 and N#272033) were from India roughly speaking, so I suspect that the remaining two might also be from that region.

Coin #1:

Base metal (bronze?), 2.30 g, 14.2 - 15.0 mm diameter

Coin #2:

Silver, 3.38 g, 14.6-15.0 mm diameter

I suspect that coin #2 may be easier to identify simply because it is easier to see the details.  Regardless, any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Coin #2 is a billon jital of the famous “Bull & Horseman” type of northern historical India (including parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan). Millions of these were made, mostly from 1100-1300 AD. It has a high silver content, indicating a somewhat earlier production date. There are many varieties, and it can be difficult to determine the variety.

If you rotate both photos 90 degrees counterclockwise, you'll see similarities (but not a match) to this one

Robert Tye’s book Jitals is also a great resource. The illustration pages are available as a free .pdf download (with registration) from https://www.academia.edu/356700/Jitals
