Hi!

I request the inclusion an Issuing Entity for Chilean banknotes.

The República de Chile (Republic of Chile) was the name of the state entity that was responsible for issuing paper money in Chile from 1880 until the creation of the Central Bank of Chile in 1925. In fact, it was the generic name used to regulate issues at the time and which is now used in catalogs and bibliographic references.

The state-owned company was created following the expiration of the licenses that several private Chilean banks had to issue banknotes in the last decades of the 19th century, thus centralizing production and distribution in Chilean territory.

More info in: https://www.billetesymonedas.cl/Billetes/HistoriaBilletes

Below are some examples of issues by the República de Chile.

N#314660

N#374314

N#378639

Thank you in advance for your attention to this request!

Regards,

Vladimir

Hi

I didnt find in your link explanation of Republic being something else than the ruling authority itself, can you point me to it?

Hello Compendium!

I confess that I am also not satisfied with this nomenclature that was used on banknotes and in international catalogues, but it is what is actually used.

From 1860 (law on issuing banks) until 1898, issues were the responsibility of several local banks in Chilean territory (which I will still request inclusion here in Numista). From the last years of the 19th century until 1925 (when the Central Bank of Chile was created), the issues were the responsibility of the government and began to circulate throughout the territory of that country (printed by ABNC and B&W).

There really is no other name that was used in those little more than 25 years (P#1 to P#70). It could have been something related to the “Casa de Moneda”, for example, but no name other than “República de Chile” appears on any banknote.

This is the summary that I believe can best clarify what happened. =)

Thanks!

Anyway the Republic already appears as ruling authority, and per our guidelines we dont duplicate information in different fields :-)

Understood!

I was waiting for this request to be resolved to request private banks (in another topic). =)

Thanks!
