The post office is the best place to swap notes into coins and maybe if your son asks they might even have a few commemoratives in the till. Alternatively just ask for a certain denomination as change.
Every banknote is easily encountered in circulation with the exception of the £50.
For coins;
1p: common
2p: uncommon
5p: common
10p: very common
20p: very common
50p: very common
£1: very common
£2: uncommon
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Are the new Charles III coins already easy to find or they're still a rare sight?
A friend of mine stayed in UK during Christmas, I asked her to get some of them but she returned with none.

(By the way, she liked the new designs)
The two commemorative 50p (2022 Memorial and 2023 Coronation) featuring the king are sort off common to find mostly the memorial I’ve found 15 in the last year or so and about 5 coronations in 6ish months.
As far as I know only the 2023 definitive Salmon 50p has gone into circulation but I have not seen one considering there is a rumoured mintage of 500,000, the rest bar the £2 has been minted for circulation but have not been released yet.

I got a Charles III 50p coin in circulation a few months ago. It is the only one I have encountered, and I believe I got it as change in a Post Office.
I find that the £2 coins are quite common in all parts of the UK, should be easy enough to get one.

So the new series is still unreleased except for the salmon?
Didn't they announce at the time that they would be in circulation at the end of the year?
I already got a memorial 50p, another friend was in London and Dublin last august. Sadly, the coronation 50p was released a few days after he departed.

All except the £2 have been confirmed to have been minted for circulation but as far as I know the Salmon 50p is the only new definitive in circulation.
Regarding the new coins in a press release “The 50p will be the first coin to enter circulation and is expected to appear in peoples change by the end of November, with other denominations expected to enter circulation from 2024 in line with demand”.

Let's see when the other coins of the series will appear in circulation.
Hope they're already circulating by the time of the next travel of my friend.
I hope they appear in circulation very soon.

For older coins, you could try Portobello Road. I was there a couple of months back and a number of shops had foreign and older British coins for sale. Otherwise, larger Post Offices often have recent issues of both coins and stamps for sale at the recommended Royal Mint price.
Alternatively, you could look at what might be coming up in the local auction houses (if you bid, your friend could collect the item and save you the postage - I found 16 in southern London on google maps). Also, tell your friend to keep an eye on their change, especially for £2 and 50p coins - there are many commemoratives in circulation.
Note that both older designs (pre 2008) and the more recent ‘royal crest’ issue are in normal circulation, except for the £1 coin which changed over to the multi sided type in 2016.
Still the 50p the only one released or is there some other coin available now?
That friend's travel I mentioned earlier, it will be next month.
Merv is right, I have yet to encounter one even with a charity shop and two coin dealers on the lookout too.
To be honest it will be easier to find most if not all of the King Charles banknotes than the Salmon 50p. We will wait until the Royal Mint publishes its mintage figures for 2023 in the coming months to see if any other definitives bar the Salmon 50p will be minted for circulation.

Thank you very much.
I'll tell her that the chances of finding the salmon 50p are still very low.
