Bought a (fake?) 5 Dollar maple leaf

I´d like to start off by saying that I bought the coin with no regards to whether its real or not because of its price. It cost me 7 euros, which isnt even a third of what they normally go.. The ebay-seller (I might add it was a private seller) stated it as “silver plated” even though I wouldnt know of such coins, he didnt state an exact weight tho (I know its on the coin, but still).

Ill attach pictures of the said coin.

Was I lucky or did I buy trash?

thought so, ill still check it on arrival tho

You should not buy fake coins, it only encourages more fake coins

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

I wouldnt buy a fake coin on purpose.. the seller is legit otherwise, I do think he just worded it wrong, honestly speaking.. I mean, the pictures sure look real, the guy doesnt sell other coins too. It should arrive on thursday, ill see if things check out and will post my findings here (in the case anyone is interested, which I doubt.)

7 euros for a coin with melt value of 22 euros?  I think the seller knew exactly what it was.

Well, yea, it very well may be like you say. I just took the gamble, y`know

It looks 100% fake…

Please cancel the order or return the item. We dont want to encourage these sellers. Websites like alibaba are flooding the market with copies and counterfeits. It's bad for the hobby!

Wow.. the post blew up. Sadly, even if the coin is fake (which all of you are pretty much in consensus with) I wont be able to cancel or return, because it was a one of a kind, private sell on ebay.  And theres a no return policy..

I kind of understand your concerns, but at the same time I kind of dont. I mean, when I bought the coin I knew I was taking a gamble, and I did it for a few reasons, the first one being that it was the only coin he was selling, second one being that he isnt a commercial seller and third being why not? Its not like I was sure that it is what it says, I bought it for the fun of it.

Also im completely sure that the seller had no malicious intent. I didnt buy the coin from a commercial vendor like alibaba, and I wouldnt have, because there I can be sure its fake.

Anyways, as I already said, todays is the days it arrives, and then it can be known for sure.

the seller stated it was silver plated, why would you assume it be anything else?

its exactly as described you don't have much grounds to return it unless the seller will allow it.

As I said, I took a gamble on that coin, it wasnt alot of money, so why not? I wouldnt go through the hassle of returning it for 7 euros anyways.

As expected (by all of you) the coin is fake. Weight is off by 0.7g (its heavier), diameter off by 1mm, also the leaf doesnt look right (it did on the photos to me, im not an expert on silver coins, especially maple leafs). Would be pretty interesting to know what the core is made of..  Id guess brass, all I can say it isnt magnetic.

I dont really regret it, as it isnt a big monetary loss, wouldnt have bought it tho if I knew it was fake in the first place.

It was a gamble like I said.

Add it to the Exonumia catalog as a Contemporary counterfeit.

I thought modern counterfeits weren't allowed.  Why encourage them to get into the Numista catalog?
