Why Exonumia and not banknotes?

Hello, not being an expert in banknotes, I want to convey a series of concerns that a new Numista user has conveyed to me about the discussion of whether certain banknotes should be in the general catalog or in Exonumia.

Before doing so, and as I have already commented on other occasions in the coin catalog, I think that Numista's tendency to send pieces to Exonumia is excessively high. This user thinks the same with the banknote catalog.

I would also like to comment that it is very important to "listen" to users who have recently joined Numista, since their vision of things is based on what, until now, they have been seeing on other websites or catalogs and you can learn a lot with them.

That said, I will transcribe his doubts exactly, to see if the Numista banknote experts can discuss this topic.

“I will be brief, so as not to extend the story and only leave a few strokes of what I wanted to explain: I consider that the largest reference catalog of banknotes in the world is World Paper Money, by Krause. What is inside WPM is banknote. I also rely on banknotemuseum.ws (very good and easy to use) and numismondo (rare pieces, difficult to catalogue). I like ATS NOTES, with an easy-to-view image database, where I usually shop (although prices have risen quite a bit).

What has caught my attention is seeing how NUMISTA sends EXONUMIA banknotes that appear referenced in all these catalogues, making it difficult to manage your collection. Some particular examples in EXONUMIA:

Austria DANUBE STATE (S151-156)

MARTINIQUE 1 FRANC 1870 (P-5A) Important

PORTUGAL imperial treasure (P5-47) S

W AFRICA - NAMIBIA (P6-18) Very difficult to obtain

ORANGE FREE STATE (S681-S689)

BULAWAYO (S661-667) Very difficult to obtain

UKRAINE (P68-70) AND (P91)

RUSSIA (P251)

YUGOSLAVIA (A1)

TEXAS Treasury (S3406)

The FX and M, taking into account that some FX do appear on banknotes (Cuba) and others do not (Vietnam, China, Bulgaria, Korea). The same with the M, all the allied banknotes appearing in BANKNOTES and sending EXONUMIA banknotes such as those from Greenland or the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, with an important numismatic value.

Not being recognized countries, these “entities” issued numismatically important banknotes:

ABKHAZIA

WALES

HERM ISLAND

FANNING ISLAND

I consider that moving them to EXONUMIA, along with the FANTASÍA tickets, does not seem appropriate.”

This is the user's message, if anyone can comment on it it would be appreciated. Likewise, I have transferred the link to this Topic to the user so that if they wish, they can also intervene.

Thanks and regards, Oscar

I don't have an opinion, but here's a list of notes with a “P” number.

I think posts like this are difficult.  The notes should be discussed on a case by case basis.  So I do not find it helpful or easy to respond with lists of different situations.

Could you repost your list with links? Then it might be possible to go through them and give an opinion.

N#224857 in particular should not be considered a banknote as it is specifically stated as a “Privatisation Cheque” (“ПРИВАТИЗАЦИОННЫЙ ЧЕК”) on the note.

N#236449 is also explicitly labelled as a “Privatisation Property Certificate”, at the top, issued during the privatisation and capitalising of the Ukrainian economy in the mid 90s. Here’s a forum on this note’s seals: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic138301.html#p1109284.
