Canada 1947 (no dot) 5 Cents - George V with cud?

Is anyone able to identify if this coin contains a minting error, like a cud, or something else? I found this nearly 40 years ago either in circulation or at a flea market in Canada. 

Looks to me like post mint damage (PMD).  Something gouged it. A cud would be caused by a die chip.  What you have is outside the area the die strikes.

You're explanation seems the most likely cause. It looked like there could be extra metal in the damaged area but its possible a deep gouge could have smeared metal into a ridge-like shape. There are other little areas on the bottom of the coin with similar galling, too.
