Peru 1/2 sol KM#216 counterfeit or not ?

2 posts • viewed 122 times

Hi everyone,

I got those two ½ sol coins from peru in very good condition. The size and the reeds on the edge are the same. The upper one in better condition weights 12.8 grams while the lower one a bit more worn stands at 12.2 grams. The numista lists the coin at 12.5 grams so both are off by 0.3. The lower one must have been cleaned.

Any thoughs if any or both could be counterfeit ? What would be the weight tolerance for a coin in this condition ?

Hi Clint_

Your coins look both ok to me; and yes, the lower (1929) was cleaned, but is still nice!

Regarding weight, I don't know the tolerance established by peruvian mint law in that time, but your figures seem to be average if I compare them with mine:

1922 Lib Inc.       12,5 gr

1922 Lib rel.        12,5 gr

1923 straight 3   12,2 gr (!)

1923 round 3      12,3 gr

1924                       12,5 gr

1926                       12,3 gr

1927                       12,9 gr (!)

1928                       12,4 gr

1929                       12, 4 gr

1935 AP                 12,5 gr

1935                        12,5 gr

This is my lightest one (1923 - straight 3):

This is my heaviest one (1927):

And here my 1928 (0.4 gr lighter than yours) and 1929 (0.2 gr heavier than yours):
