Please I still have some ottoman coins for ID

18mm,  0,7gr

Mustafa III, mint is Istambul

1171 RY says 81

N#42255

I just don't get the regnal year, how can be 81 if Mustafa reigned just 17 years

Hand-struck Islamic coins often had blundered regnal years, due to illiterate engravers and other reasons. On the Numista page cited above the combination 1171/81 is listed as a relatively common one for this type of coin, and was struck in the year 1768.

I thought that the 81 on this coin meant the year AH1181 (AD 1768). So not illiterate engravers but a different dating method than using the regnal year.

many thanks

regnal year 18 engraved retrograde?  a common error taking into account they have to engrave the entire die back to front

I think not as that would be 1188, one year after his reign. According to SCWC 81 is shorthand for 1181.
