working on my VIETNAM collection

came across this error

Vietnam 2000 Dong 1988(1989) P187a

old well circulated note  130x63 mm

Unc note                                 135x65 mm     so slightly larger- I have several copies of the UNC one and they are all the same

Numista states 
133 × 65 mm

is the circulated note different printing

Is it possible for paper notes to shrink by this amount with circulation

Your images show a top margin crop on the UNC note, which would make it SMALLER, not larger.

So, was the UNC image cropped by accident?

As for the smaller circulated note, it appears the centering and margins are normal, so I have no good answer.

I would vote no on the shrinking.

I agree with rsirian1. 

Another possibility is that it has a 1-2 mm miscut. My 1969 1 dollar bills are almost all miscut like this, so it is realistically still possible 20 years later.

Thankyou for your input guys-we are not talking about 1-2mm we are looking at 5mm

will leave this open for more opinion, but i believe the note has somehow got wet (gone thru the wash) and shrunk by 5mm

I do not believe the bottom note has been shrunk. I believe these are from different prints. For a 5mm variant is quite a lot. Also have a look at the serial numbers. Measuring from the base, the top note is about 79.5mm whilst the bottom note is 85mm. If the bottom has shrunk, then why have the design become smaller but not the serial numbers?

I believe that the two notes are P-107a.1 and P-107a.2 in your photo. Hard to confirm with the photos that you have posted. Measure the distance from the front of the prefix to the end of the number. I think you will see the difference there. When I lived in Vietnam and collected these notes from the wild there were many variations in the sizes. I think due to lack of quality control that you see at places like De La Rue or G&D.

To make this more interesting I have two low value Cambodian notes with 5-6 mm variation in size and they are the same prefix. I’m sure one shrank from something as well as cutting discrepancies. 
 

Some of the low value notes from here in south east Asia have low standards for quality control. I can’t say the same for the large denominations though.
