Do you own a pièce unique?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone owns one-of-a-kind coins and if you would show them.

For me, I am a metal detectorist so it is a bit easier to be sure my coins are not fake.
Some years ago, I found this coin in Flanders. N#412551

It is an oord of Gronsveld, a county that produced many “counterfeit” coins imitating dutch coinage of that time.

There are some very similar variants of this coin, you can find them summarized here.

Here is a similar coin:

I consulted some experts in this type of coinage, and they say that the coin is very similar to known half-oords yet is clearly an (unknown) oord.

Here is a drawing of all the details I could see:

Obviously I haven't looked at all catalogues and checked every coin, but as far as I know it's unique.

that is really cool! closest coin related thing i have to a 1 of a kind known is a 1973 philippines proof set (10k made)

Wow! That's amazing!

The one in my profile picture isn't one of a kind, but it does only have an estimated population of below 120 pieces.

That is super low wow! Lowest I've seen in person was a gold one from Crimea that had 9 known. It was at a coin show recently

That is so cool. I guess that ‘my’ coin was originally minted in much larger numbers.

That's amazing. I wonder what happened to all of them and why there are so few.

Who knows, but it's definitely fascinating to encounter a previously unknown type!

I own the Isle of Man 2 pound dirigible.  For years it was the only known.  Now I think there are 4 or 5.

Library Media Specialist, columnist, collector, and gardener...

I own a couple of tokens that were made for use in  company stores /canteens in my town - they have the company name and my town's name stamped on them and that 's how I know they are from here. Since the companies weren't that big ,  there weren't that many tokens  made to begin with , and adding on top of that their age , It's no surprise there are next to none left .

Just to give you an Idea of how rare they are - google doesn't even have any information for them or a  picture of any of them .

My parents and grandparents were the ones who remembered these companies and who remembered that they had their own  company stores /canteens , which is basically all the information I have on them .

The only other thing I have is the tokens themselves and their design and material - from that I would guesstamate one is about 100-120+ years old and the other one is about 90-100 years old .

They truly are unique pieces and I will probably add them on here one day soon .

That is quite interesting! Maybe you could ask in the city's archives for more information about the companies. This kind of reminded me of another coin I own. It was made into jewellery and had quite a high mintage of above 10,000. But it looks like the survivability is quite low as there are no auction records about this particular year/type!

Thanks for the suggestion  !

One of the companies is actually very well known in town ( It closed for good in about 2009 ) , so I have a pretty good idea of that token's history and time period. It's simply that none are left apparently .

The other one is a complete mystery as the company ( from the token's design ) appears to have been around sometime around 1900 .

The big problem with searching for information over here Is that basically none of the archives are digitalised, and knowing that I only have a name , that would mean literally digging through literal decades of paperwork  to find any information.

There is an extra  little bit of  hope of finding  information as on the token It says that the company had a branch in another town nearby , but because their archives are not digitalised  as well , that just looks like yet another mountain of paper to look through .

I have been looking up local historians and I have come across a couple of guys that are really knowledgeable( literal walking archives, one has literally written 10 books on various aspects of my towns history  ) , now the only thing I have left to do is try to find any contact information so I can contact  and ask them . At least one of them will either know something about the company or know someone who knows , I hope .

Good luck! I hope that you'll find the information you're looking for. Make sure to give us an update on them!

I owe some unique banknotes.

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

I found a wire kopeck of Ivan V not described in any catalogues. So I guess this one is unique for the moment.

Also I guess some contemporary counterfeits I own may be unique. I even added them to Numista
