Is this a proof five cent?

Also silver? Can you give me its grading as well?

Weight will tell you if it's silver (5.35g) or copper-nickel (4.5 g).

But is it a proof either way?

I don’t believe that for 1997 the circulation coin ( Cu-Ni) was issued in Proof. The only Proof that year was for the Silver version.   There was a “proof-like” Cu-Ni that year but I’m now sure how that differs from a Proof.

So will its weight settle it for sure?

yes

And what grade is it? XF?

I'd say so.

It doesn't really look like a proof to me.  It gives me the specimen finish vibe.

Is that better than the proof?

And what grade is it? XF?

I don't see much wear, just some jitter/small contact marks and a little bit of wear on the hair, so I'd say AU.
