(EN) The Spanish Bank of San Fernando was a financial institution created in 1829 at the initiative of the Minister of Finance of Spain, Luis López Ballesteros, replacing the old “Banco de San Carlos”, assuming its debt and increasing its capital, with the intention of making it the first public bank with the capacity to issue currency in Spain, although it was two-thirds owned by private shareholders.
Among its activities, in addition to those mentioned, it became a de facto financial instrument to save the liquidity of the Public Treasury, especially on the occasion of the Carlist War in the Isabellan reign. Later, with the creation of the Bank of Isabel II in 1844, both entities would end up merging (1847) under the name of Spanish Bank of San Fernando, until it transformed its name into Bank of Spain in 1856.
(ES) El Banco de San Fernando o Banco Español de San Fernando fue una institución financiera creada en 1829 por iniciativa del Ministro de Hacienda de España, Luis López Ballesteros, en sustitución del antiguo Banco de San Carlos, asumiendo la deuda de aquel e incrementando su capital con la intención de convertirlo en el primer banco de carácter público, con capacidad de emisión de moneda de España, aunque estaba participado en dos tercios por accionistas privados.
Entre sus actividades, además de las señaladas, se convirtió de facto en instrumento financiero para salvar la liquidez del Tesoro Público, especialmente con ocasión de la guerra carlista en el reinado isabelino. Posteriormente, con la creación del Banco de Isabel II en 1844, ambas entidades se acabarían fusionando (1847) con el nombre de Banco Español de San Fernando, hasta que transformó su nombre en Banco de España en el año 1856.
