Hello everyone

i just joined this website a few days, its an amazing place

I have a question maybe someone knows about

Last night i was trying to get wrinkles out of some money by using an iron and putting them in water

The bills now under uv light look damaged or stained, they are dry as well. Im wondering if this is permanent or not

I have not done this before, but I believe the answer is Yes.

Moral of the story - never wash and iron your money in any condition.

For new and uncirculated banknotes, if possible, never handle them with your bare hand.

It's like polishing a coin, what's done is done.

Yes it is permanent!

A UV light source is one of the ways I use to examine a note to see if it has been washed or pressed.

Cool thank you . But i dont understand because i just used water and dried them . How is that different than one getting wet from rain ?

It's not different, minus the ironing, water damage is water damage if deliberate or accidentally.

I know youre not an expert …

but you said the polishing the coin

do you have any tips on cleaning old coins that wont ruin them ?

Never done it my self but if you mean crusty Roman coins that look like clumps of dirt, you usually get rid of all remaining earth with neutral soapy water baths and then use low acid olive oil soaks for weeks to months to get rid of surface encrustations. The remaining steps can be labour intensive and also ruin the coins were you have to remove remaining encrustations with specific tools.  There is also electrolysis but you have to know what you are doing for that.  You can find many guides on the internet. One of the few instances were cleaning is warranted, otherwise you wouldn't even know if it's even a coin.

Look for upgrades (that's what most collectors do).

Generally, you cannot clean coins without damaging them and reducing their grade.

Is there any particular UV that you recommend?

I use a small torch size like this one:
