Taiwan coin border

The catalog describes the reverses of the 1 and 5 jaio coins Taiwan introduced in 1967,  N#7861 and N#6106, as “denomination”  but they both have a very interesting border with a symbol repeated four times.  There are different symbols on the two denominations (detail below from the 5 jiao) which remind me of Aztec glyphs. Do these symbols have any significance?
