Hospital De S, Jose

Hi

Can anyone here provide me with more info for the above note? I have a full set of 5 (5 to 50 centavos) and I only paid $2.50 for the set back in 1998. I bought them out of curiosity, after all $2.50 in those days can't buy you lunch either. I believe these are emergency vouchers issued by the hospital, and below are my questions"-

1) Why?;

2) What is Arcos de Valdevez in English? My Google Translate is not helping me;

3) Is Hospital De S. Jose is the same as Hospital De San Jose?;

4) Is this hospital still around?;

5) In what year was it issued? I have it as 1918 (seller info listing), but most sellers listed them as 1920 or 1920s.; and

6) For how long were these notes/vouchers valid for at the hospital?

Thanking you in advance.

Probably token-money used in the former hospital of Arcos de Valdevez (north of Portugal). It is indeed “Hospital de São José”

Hi
Good morning from Portugal

In this link, provided by the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas (Portuguese Mercy Houses), you will be able to read all the information about the Portuguese crisis during WW1, the hyperinflation, the governmental instability of the 1st Republic, which led to the issue of this type of municipal banknote. The text is long, but it contains all the information you need to understand your Portuguese municipal banknotes.

The text on the link is written in Portuguese, but it's easy to translate.
Arcos de Valdevez is the name of a town in Portugal, so it has no correct translation, and the Hospital de São José still exists. In Portuguese “S.” means “São” and not “San”, which it does in Spanish. The circulation of these banknotes was banned by ministerial decree on December 7, 1922.

I hope you get a better understanding of the history of your Portuguese municipal banknotes after reading this document.

PS - These notes are currently sold in Portugal for around 10 euros each.
