Counter stamped coin classification

3 posts • viewed 112 times

When a legal tender coin issued by a country is countered stamped for the purpose to commemorate an event. Does that coin retain its original classification “as a coin" or does it get reclassified as exonumia? For example, a Canadian dollar is countered stamped to mark Prince Charles and Lady Diane's wedding. I assume you could still use it  if you wanted to.

Oh, I also wanted to create topic about counterstamped coin classification and catalogisation.

But replying to the first question, I think it shall be added to Exonumia based on c/m. The question is shall we create different pages of different yearlines in case the same c/m was added to different types/years of coin.

Expanding your question…

1. In case a coin of one issuer counterstamped by another issuer, we shall put it to the issuer that added a c/m, correct?

2. If we have 5 types of c/m, shall we create 5 pages?

3. If I have a coin that has 2 different c/m, how can I add it?

4. If we have 50 types of coins that may be counterstamped, shall we add them separately?

4a.Shall we create yearlines for each “mother coin” in this case? Or just add a page with c/m is enough?

5. If we have 20 types of coins that may be counterstamped with 20 types of c/m, how shall we catalogue them?

My way back home from the office takes about one hour  walking, so this is a good time to think about something. And the last time, thanks to this thread, I thought about possible classification and registration of countermarked (c/m) coins into Numista catalogue.

From my collection experience I can remember these types of c/m:

  1. Official VS Private
  2. Known VS unknown meaning
  3. Changing ruler VS made by the same ruler
  4. Changing an issuer VS made by the same issuer
  5. Changing a currency VS not intended to change a currency
  6. Made on single type of coins VS made on different coins of the same issuer VS made on different coins of different issuers
  7. Engraved on stamp VS Made after minting of coins
  8. Coins that have 2 or more different c/m

So, how to catalogue it?

1. Official VS Private

This is the easiest problem. Official shall be added to the Coins section, Private – to Exonumia one. Questionable c/m shall be discussed on Forum.

E.g. I think this page shall be moved to Exonumia:)

A separate case is if private c/m mentioned in the catalogue that was used to create a country catalogue or in Krause… I think such c?m shall be listed in coins section. I don't know such examples, but possibly they exist.

2. Known VS unknown meaning

I don’t think we need a special rule for c/m of unknown meaning, they just shall be described as “of unknown meaning”.

3-5. Changing ruler/Issuer/currency

In case c/m has changed something from above, it shall be listed on separate page attributed to the new ruler/issuer/currency.

The previous ruler/Issuer/currency shall be mentioned in Tytle only in case it may be only one variant of it.

E.g., on this page currency shall be renamed from Fals to Dangi because c/m changed it.

6. Made on single type of coins VS made on different coins of the same issuer VS made on different coins of different issuers

  • In case c/ms were made only on the coins on one type and don't change anything (especially in case they are on unknown meaning),  they may be listed as a yearline. Example
  • In case the c/m might be made on limited and known amount of coin types, a separate page for c/m shall be created and variants of mother coins shall be listed as yearlines.
  • In case the c/m may be made on quite a lot types of coins, a separate page for c/m shall be created, but there is no need to create separate yearlines by types or mention previous coin in tytle. E.g. here it is better to remove mentioning on Bukhara mint fals from the tytle because such c/m may be made also on coins from Bukhara, Andijan and other. Also currency shall be changed to Dangi.
  • In case the c/m might be made on limited and known amount of issuers, separate yearlines for each issuer may be created.  E.g., we can create yearlines here because this c/m may be made onquite a lot of types of  Golden Horde puls as well as on Anatolyan Beylicks coins.

7. Engraved on dies VS Made after minting of coins

This is simple. In case c/m was engraved on the dies, it shall be mentioned in Tytle or in the yearlines

8. Coins that have 2 or more different c/m

In case this is an established common combination of c/m, it may be listed in a separate coin page.

In case sequense of making c/m known and they changed something, the coin shall be catalogised by the last c/m.

In case the combination is uncommon and random, there is no need to create a separate page for such combination.

Feel free to discuss and update.

Also it will be great to move this thread to Numista website part of the Forum.
