Civil War Merchant Token - William Wagner Merchant Taylor Ann Arbor, Michigan

5 posts • viewed 37 times

My name is Peter Wagner, William Wagner is my Great Great Great Grandfather. I was unaware of the existence of this Token until I was researching my Wagner Family History. I have absolutely no idea how to go about trying to find this Token, or if I'm dreaming about even thinking that I could find one, and at what cost?

I appreciate any help / thoughts, etc.

Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to Numista!

First things first. Are you asking about this?  N#372513  (You did post in the banknote forum.)

This catalog may give you more information.  https://en.numista.com/catalogue/catalogue.php?id=149

Here is one on sale in ebay  for $600 OBO (Variety 2).  https://www.ebay.com/itm/325327110249

You will pay more for a certified one. I'm not an expert on these so I don't know if that price is reasonable or not. There may be values in the catalog I referenced.  Perhaps @JLHare can tell you more.

Not much to add other than what is on the page. I will add the rarity ratings from the reference mentioned.

There is a 3rd variety not added to Numista yet. All are copper, about 19mm and plain edge.

MI-040-E-1a - R-6 (21 to 75 known)

MI-040-E-2a - R-3 (501 to 2000 known)

MI-040-E-3a - R-8 (5 to 10 known)

Those numbers come from the reference.

There is also a Charles A. Wagner in Columbus, Ohio with 6 civil war tokens none of which have been added to Numista. May not be any relation, just thought I would mention it since I saw it in the reference.

I will add the rarity ratings from the reference mentioned.

Just a quick note, but rarity should not be included in the yearline field. :)
