Identification of an Antoninianus - Probus VIRTVS PROBI AVG; Mars [solved]

I think it's N#286650

not sure.

Hello and welcome to our site.

All I can say for now is that's not the coin you selected.

Can't say if it's really Gallienus, I would like to tell you which emperor is in your coin, but I'm having trouble to read the upper letters due to the angle of the photo.

But I can say outright it's not the one you linked because in your coin the lettering ends in “…VS AVG”.

Same for the reverse side, in your coin the text is too large to be simply “VIRTVS AVG”, the “VIRTV” begins at 7h and already ends at 10h.

On the flip side, the mintmark is well visible, it's XXI(?) - don't know if there's really a 4th letter.

Hello,

Welcome aboard 😀

VIRTVS is good but not followed by AVG

XXI on exergue

On obverse the legend is not GALLIENVS

Fortunately, Numista get a search by image engine far better than Google for coins.

You should crop the picture for better definition and (optional) remove the background with the help of Pixlr

Then use the search by image

And you'll imediatly identify your coin 😀

I let you discover it …

Thank you very much, I found only 1 and the images are not good. Though it's An Antoninianus of Emperor Tacitus (reigned 275-276 AD) with a "VIRTVS PERPETVA" reverse legend. but mine is not whole I think. On the scale it's 2.78 grams

No, you didn't proceed correctly :

Download the cropped pictures I posted above

Select "Rome"

Write “VIRTVS” (with 2 “V”)

Import both images one after the other

Then … It will work 😀

This is the only result I get

N#293167

Though it says 3.7 grams and mine is 2.78 g

Sorry, I am not responsible for variations in the weight of Roman industrial casting 🤣

Once identified, modify the title “ Identification of an Antoninianus - Probus VIRTVS PROBI AVG; Mars”

and check as solved.

Or you still get some doubt you may modify the title as :

“Is it normal to get a variation of 1 gram on an antoninianus from Probus ?”
