100 Tomans

Why don't we have the face value of the current Irani Tomans, such as the following?

N#341954

toman (Persian: تومان, romanized: tūmân, pronounced [tuː.mɒːn]; from Turko-Mongolian tümen “unit of ten thousand”

Name is literally a number. People needed more zeros to switch from pengo to milpengo.

Also the amount of zeroes seems to be context sensitive … at least for Iranians (between 10 and a million 🙃)

My real question is that this one has face value showing, why not the new one?

for sure not a correct value, as one can buy them way below "face value"

calculation seems similat to this exchange rate (which is way too high compared to sales online) :

this one gives a more realistic exchange rate of US$3 for 2.000.000 reals

@Xavier  could you check the connected exchange rate? and probably remove the “Toman” currency as it's just Rials divided by 10 and so does not need a separate currency … (and then also ommitting thousands and millions) Maybe it's a trick to make people forget about inflation 😄

Just call me Bram

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

So what's the catch here? They are being sold below the face value but why? Because the value will only be available in Iran where you can spend them and because very few people go there?

Hello,

1 toman is officially equivalent to 10 rials. In practice, when mentioning a price, Iranian people rarely say “thousand”. So a price of 1 000 000 rials will be expressed as “100”, meaning 100 thousand tomans.

The largest number visible on the banknotes is expressed in thousand tomans. But the word “toman” is not mentioned. The only currency written on the banknotes is “RIALS” / “ریال”, with the value written in full.

So I updated the banknote pages:

  • Added “thousand” in the title, for example changing “100 Tomans / 1 000 000 Rials” into “100 Thousand Tomans / 1 000 000 Rials”.
  • Changed the currency from Tomans to Rials.

See the banknote series: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/series.php?id=7049

With the change of currency, the converted face value now appears on the page.

However, the converted value is based on the official exchange rate, similar to what is available on xe.com. The black market exchange rate is very different.

In October 2024, the official exchange rate is 1 USD = 42,000 IRR whereas the parallel exchange rate is 1 USD  = 640,000 rials = 64 thousand tomans
