Peru Currency Question

7 posts • viewed 64 times

Hello, and thanks for your help.

My wife and I lived in Peru from 1975-1979 and I took up coin and currency collecting on a small scale while there and since we returned to the States. Because of my age, I am working on the identification of my notes. Numista has been a wonderful assistant with this task and helping with P#'s should I decide to sell at some point. I don't have a Pick Catalog.

Anyway, today I came across Peru, 20 Soles, P# 173 dated October 12, 2000 (12 de Octubre Del 2000.)  Except for a quick mention on Numista, I can find no other mention of this particular date/type combination. Am I missing something and could these possibly be counterfeit notes?

Just curious, and thanks so much.

Would this help?

What do you mean by ‘quick mention’? There is a whole catalog page about it.

BTW what is the reason for the split in 3 (N#237512 N#206984)? I have seen no real differences between the issues other then the picture of the reverse of P# 173 being cropped beyond believe but if there is one please add the main difference in the title.

Hello, and thank you both for your quick and helpful responses! I guess by “quick mention” on Numista, they did an excellent job in listing the bill. What I should have asked is if the 12 De Octubre Del 2000 was common as I could not find any offers for sale of this note.  I will assume that this is a common, regular issue then. Thank you both!

Currency collecting was not ever really my forte. I was into coins and did that for many years. The currency I have, from MANY countries, is from my passing interest during my 4 years employed in Peru and 2 in Yugoslavia. I acquired many notes from all over the world; many traded from other Embassy employees from many countries that my wife and I visited. I am just now 40+ years older, getting to cataloging the pieces. No great treasures but I did pick up by chance, several nice notes from Peru and Yugoslavia (we were in Belgrade…now Serbia). I'm a “senior” and neither my son nor grandson collect so I may try to sell on eBay. (Lots of questions on how to do THAT as I have sold coins but never currency there).

SO sorry. Did not mean to ramble. Again, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with me. Very much appreciated!

@Alglass71, there is no need to apologise. It is fine to ask questions here, and it also gives some members here the opportunity to post their opinions here too. Like many, I am (forever) also learning as well.

I love the old classic designs from Peru (pre-1968) but have yet to get them (some are on my wish list).

One of my favourite Nuevos Soles designs is this 10 Nuevos Soles from 1991 - 2006 (P-151 to P-179).

Here's my 2005 (P-179a) version but there are also modified later designs & earlier designs I'd love to get someday:

Hello, Serial_Number_8.

I'm sort of new to this site (I have been on the coin site frequently in the past) so I hope I don't break any rules here with this post.

First, I'm showing my ignorance about your 10 soles note but isn't the plane upside down? It kind of reminds me of that famous old U.S postage stamp where the plane was upside down in error.

Anyway, I have some older Peru currency, no treasures to be sure and I was wondering if you have any specific wants for your collection. Individually listing them on eBay is much too labor-intensive for the small return and I don't ship outside the U.S. Too expensive, even with the eBay services. Is trading/selling allowed through this site?

Thanks.

Alan
