Greetings,

Going through my fathers old coin collection I came across this specimen and have found nothing like it.

23.6mm dia

4.4g

non-ferrous

fairly confident that its silver.  the tarnish looks right

Under a loop I can confirm its milled, not cast.

any opinions, thoughts, and/or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Welcome abord 😃

Your coin is a bit light.

Year 38

N#12423

Unfortunately as well as being underweight the details are not correct. Compare :

Thank you all for your replies.

yeah, I noticed it was a little light, but its was the incorrect dragon image that really threw me.

does any one have an idea of why someone would produce this?  (almost like counterfeiting a 5 dollar bill…  :) )

is there any chance I hit the jackpot and this is ‘proof’ coin in the development process?  (LOL)

also, can anyone translate the Chinese characters on the back or know of an app that will do it?  (I tired and failed miserably)

Thanks again

Thanks again

It's already translated in teh the Numista file

N#12423

or you may use Google-translate

Referee of south atlantic islands

that coin is very close, but it's the two characters (outside the circle) that I'm having a tough time with.

vs the numista record

Thnx again, really appreciate it the help

The Numista coin pictured is year 37 子庚. Yours is year 38 丑辛.

awesome!  that is exactly what I needed to know.

thanks.

last question.

is there a collectors market for such ‘oddities’ ?

thanks again to everyone

They are not oddities. These counterfeits are meant to decieve for profit and there will always be a market for the unscupulous. When I run across counterfeits of any kind I try to document or catalog them wherever possible so that others know what to look out for so they they too dont fall victim to and enrich counterfeiters. I ususally destroy them or otherwise make certain they never see circulation again. But that is just me. Please look at the link to Chinese replicas/counterfeits below.

 https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=china&r=&st=54&cat=y&im1=&im2=&ru=&ie=&ca=3&no=&v=&a=&dg=&i=&b=&m=&f=&t=&t2=&w=&mt=&u=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=

I definitely will not sell it then.  Thnx for the heads up.

Im going to do a little more digging.

All the examples that are on that “Contemporary counterfeits” page look like fakes to me, plus being steel.  (I'll try a volume / weight test to get the density.  see if its really silver)

after I've chased my tail a bit more and given up, I'll put its picture up and toss it in the koi pond.

thnx again

It sleeps with the koi….
